Wie stumbles to miss PGA cut

Michelle Wie failed in her eighth attempt to make the cut on the PGA Tour, shooting a second-round 80 at the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open yesterday in Nevada. Parker McLachlin tied the course record with a 10-under-par 62 to take a four-stroke lead over Larry Mize and three others.

Wie shot 1-over 73 Thursday as she attempted to become the first woman since Babe Zaharias in 1945 to make the cut on the PGA Tour. But a quintuple-bogey 9 yesterday pushed her to 9-over 153 at the Montreux Golf & Country Club.

Wie, 18, who was making her first PGA appearance since January 2007, had two bogeys and one birdie through her first nine holes and was within striking distance of the even-par cut line. But she had a double bogey on her 13th hole of the day (No. 4), and the quintuple bogey came four holes later when she had to take two penalty strokes.

McLachlin, who has five Top 25 PGA finishes this year, birdied seven of the last 10 holes.

LPGA - Yuri Fudoh and Ji-Yai Shin each shot a 4-under 68 to lead by one stroke and equal the halfway record (10-under 134) at the Women's British Open, while Annika Sorenstam's 72 was just enough to make the cut in Sunningdale, England.

Sorenstam stumbled over the front nine for the second day in a row, bogeying the fifth, sixth, and seventh holes. In danger of failing to make it to the weekend of her final major before she quits tournament golf at the end of the year, she birdied 9 through 11 to finish at even-par 144, safe from the projected cut of 1 over.

PGA/WGC - Vijay Singh shot a 4-under 66 for a 7-under 133 to take a one-shot lead over Phil Mickelson (66) after two rounds of the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

Champions - At Colorado Springs, Fred Funk fired a 69 and sits at 6-under 134 at the halfway point of the US Senior Open. Eduardo Romero (69) is two back.

Ouimet Memorial - Jay Driscoll carded a 2-under 70 at Woodland Golf Club in Auburndale to win the 41st edition of the tournament by one stroke.
