Newport's news
Once again, an entry from Newport National will represent the New England area in the national McGladrey Team Championship. Using the best-ball of two format, Jamie Farrea, Todd Camara, and Andrew Marshall teamed with Newport National club pro Andrew Farrea to shoot 131 at Turner Hill CC in Ipswich, then prevail in a playoff against Ron Philo of Sugarbush GC in Vermont, and Peter Koval, Paul Beard, and Nate Bedford. Terry O'Hara of Cyprian Keyes, who played with Dan Falcucci, Erin Genis, and Peter Fantoni, shot 133 to tie for third with John Rainone of North Kingstown and Rob Aldrich, Dave Nuttal, and Paul Gendren. The national McGladrey Team Championship will be held Oct. 20-22 in Pinehurst, N.C.

Joe Cunningham shot 1-under-par 71 to take medalist honors in a qualifier for the Chrysler Club Championship at the Renaissance GC in Haverhill. Also advancing were Peter Williamson (72) of Hanover, N.H., Dave Houghton of Orleans (73), and Ryan Riley of Attleboro (73). Elizabeth McCabe of Brae Burn CC and Cathy Sessions of Sterling CC each shot 80 to also advance to the national championship, which will be held in December at Tiburon GC in Naples, Fla.

With rounds of 74-72, Jeff Mucciarone of Westwood posted a two-stroke win in a 36-hole Boston Amateur Golf Society tournament at Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater. Mucciarone also prevailed by six in a tournament at River Bend CC in West Bridgewater.

Pros
Curl cashes in
Jeff Curl posted a second-round 64 to fuel his three-stroke win in the Golfers' Warehouse Tour Championship in Wintonbury Hills, Conn. Finishing at 16-under 200, Curl left Dustin Cone (66-67-70 -203) fighting for second, which he took by one over a trio of golfers - Andrew Svoboda (70-68-66), Steven Alminas (67-70-67), and Keegan Bradley (71-65-68). That runner-up finish allowed Cone to finish first on the money list with $10,488, just $58 ahead of Steve Sokol. Cone and Sokol thus earn a bonus of $4,500 that will go toward their PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament entry. Jim Renner of Plainville finished third on the list, with $9,145.

Andy Morse, a journeyman whose pro career stretches to before the first of his two State Open wins in 1989, shot 6-under 64 at Marshfield CC to take medalist honors in a New England Open qualifier. Michael Carbone (66) of Brewster and Matthew Baran (67) of Oyster Harbors were right behind Morse. Among the other 12 who qualified were Devon Quigley (68) and Jason Parajeckas (69), whose fathers, Dana and Paul, respectively, are longtime friends.

The NEPGA Cystic Fibrosis Pro-Am tournaments drew the usual sold-out crowds. At Charles River CC, Mark Costaregni of The International shot 1-under 69 to take low pro honors, edging Allen Santos of Trull Brook by one, while Paul Parajeckas of Pleasant Valley CC and Shawn Hester of the host course finished third with 71s. A team led by Dan Gillis of Amherst CC shot 65 to take low gross, while Todd Cook of Tedesco CC anchored the low net entry, at 57. At Woodland GC, Jim Landers of Marlboro CC shot 71, squeezing past John Theo of Far Corner by one for low pro. Low gross went to a team led by Jim O'Mara of Charles River at 64, with an entry anchored by John Simmons of Fenner Hill taking low net at 56.

Robert Bradley of Norton and Christopher McMillan of Belmont fired even-par 71s to share low pro honors in the NEPGA Assistant Pro-Lady tournament at Oakley CC in Watertown. Brian Smith of Worcester CC was one stroke back. In the team competition, Smith joined with Peg Hickey and Lynda Messina of the host course to win with a 61.

Juniors
Conn. rules region
Connecticut stormed to a convincing victory in the annual New England Junior Invitational at Wanumetonomy Golf & CC in Middletown, R.I. Vermont finished second, eight strokes back, while Massachusetts was third. The low scorer for Massachusetts was Josh Salah of Gloucester, who shot 74-69-70 -213. Individually, Salah was third, behind Evan Russell of Vermont (211) and Curtis Loop of Connecticut (212). Also playing for Team Massachusetts were Mickey Werenski, Peter French, Ricky Stimets, Brad Cadigan, Brendan Meagher, and Anthony Dilisio.

The Blue Hill CC entry of Jake Shuman and Izzy Southard combined for a 69 to win the team competition at the Metro-West Junior Open at Glen Ellen CC. In individual play, Wesley Koen of Salem shot 74 to take the boys' 15-17 division, Monica Doyle of Dedham (92) prevailed in the girls' 15-17, and Brett Thomas of Medfield (82) won the 12-14.

Richard Werenski of South Hadley posted scores of 70-73-66-75 -284 to share ninth place in the PGA Junior Championship in Maineville, Ohio.

Cadigan of South Weymouth shot 71-73-76 -220 to finish tied for eighth in an AJGA tournament in Elverson, Penn. Ian Thimble (225) of Hyde Park was joint 16th.

Seniors
Best buddies
A pair of Connecticut golfers - Jim Goshdigian of Hartford and Mike Bedus of Suffield - combined to shoot 65 and win the New England Senior Tour's Buddy Young Memorial Tournament at Elmcrest CC. Tad Constant of Presidents GC in Quincy joined forces with Bill Kidik of Braintree to finish second, one stroke back. Tom Wecal of Woonsocket, R.I., and Christopher Young of Newbury were third, at 67.

Paul Parajeckas shot 67 and stormed to a five-stroke victory in a NEPGA Senior Pro-Am win at Haverhill CC. Bob Giusti of the Country Club of Halifax (61) anchored the winning team.

Women
Joy-Connelly rolls
Staked to a two-stroke lead thanks to an opening 72, Tara Joy-Connelly of Cohasset GC breezed to victory in the WGAM Grace Keyes Cup at Belmont CC. A second-round 77 left Joy-Connelly at 149, six clear of Claire Sheldon of The Country Club (77-78), while Joanne Catlin of Winchendon School GC (75-81) finished third.

The Executive Women's Golf Association has started a mentoring program that teams beginning golfers with experienced golfers as a way of getting started in the game. For contact information on the three local chapters, refer to the website www.ewga.com.

Tournaments
Boyles fly high
Bill and Erin Boyle represented Brae Burn CC with distinction at the MGA Father-Daughter Championship at Ludlow CC as they won in dramatic fashion - with an eagle at the second playoff hole. Shooting 73 to tie the Fresh Pond duo of Paul and Stephanie Frankian, the Boyles won the alternate-shot format when Bill used Erin's drive and hit an approach within 10 feet at the 485-yard, par-5 second. With the title on the line, Erin, a senior-to-be at Wake Forest, calmly sank the eagle roll.

Aces
Wedded bliss
She had witnessed a hole-in-one by her husband, Mike, just a few days earlier, so like any true competitor, Sue Curtin wasn't going to let it go unchallenged. Out in the Seattle area for a friend's wedding, Sue got a chance to play the heralded Chambers Bay and at the 118-yard, par-3 third she used a pitching wedge to make her ace. An exquisite shot in any case, it was even more so considering that less than a week earlier she had been in a group when Mike used a 50-degree gap wedge to ace the 16th at TPC Boston during a Driving 4 Life Invitational fund-raiser to fight ALS.

With a full house of golfers in attendance at the club championship at Granite Links GC in Quincy, what won the highlight reel in the opening round were a pair of aces. They came at the demanding par-3 seventh, which is all carry, and Jay Chaudhry of Brookline did the honors from the back tees (218 yards) in the championship flight, while Richard Lindsay of Charlestown did similarly from 187 yards in the first flight. Both used 5-irons.
