Pros
Jacobs leads way
Hal Jacobs of Stow Acres CC shot 1-under 69 to win the NEPGA Massachusetts PGA Championship at Oak Hill CC in Fitchburg. Frank Dully of Kernwood CC was one stroke back, followed by Kevin Wood (71) of Salem CC and Chris Carter (72) of Hillview.

In the race for Player of the Year honors on the Tarheel Tour, Kevin Silva of New Bedford is tied for second with 525 points, trailing the leader by 75.

Seniors
Cape crusaders
Jim Sheerin, a two-time champion from Abenaqui CC in Rye Beach, N.H., will tee it up in the 10th Cape Cod Senior Open. The $17,000 tournament begins Sept. 16 at Cape Cod CC and concludes the next day at Hyannis GC. Fran Marrello of Watertown, Conn., last year's leading pro, has also entered, as have Paul Parajeckas of Pleasant Valley CC and amateur Jim Ruschioni. The entry deadline is Sept. 12. For information, refer to www.ccopen.com.

Amateurs
Homebred qualifier
With a round of 70 on his home course, Tedesco CC in Marblehead, Cy Kilgore took medalist honors at a qualifier for the US Senior Amateur (Sept. 20-25) at Shady Oaks CC in Fort Worth. Ray Richard of Thorny Lea GC shot 72 and tied for second with Joe Keller of Oyster Harbors and Paul Murphy of Charles River CC, while Paul Nunez of Holliston earned the fifth spot with a 73. Though he had home-course knowledge, Kilgore didn't make things easy on himself when he bogeyed Nos. 1 and 2, and four of the first seven holes. But he birdied eight and nine, then made three more coming home to get in with a par effort.

Doug Bray of Brookline shot 78 to win a Boston Amateur Golf Society tournament at Triggs Memorial GC in Providence. At Atlantic CC in Plymouth, Glenn Watson of Malden shot 75 to score a two-stroke victory.

Juniors
National exposure
Some of the top players in the country took part in the John D. Mineck Deutsche Bank Championship Junior Cup at the Boston Golf Club in Hingham. Named after the late founder of the course, the tournament featured 36 players divided into two teams - USA vs. New England. Steve Feinstein served as captain of Team USA, which scored a victory over Dave Adamonis's Team New England. For Team USA, Juliet Vongphoumy and Joe Winslow were part of two victories, while Nick McLaughlin and Nick Torrance had a pair of wins each for Team New England.

At the close of the DBC Junior Cup, Ryan Gay of Augusta, Maine, received a scholarship and the sportsmanship award named in memory of Mineck. A two-time winner of the Maine State Junior title, Gay won the Maine State Amateur this summer. He will receive $20,000 over four years toward his education at the University of New Mexico. Gay plays competitively in both AJGA and US Challenge Cup events. Last week he teamed with longtime standout Mark Plummer to win the Maine State Two-Man title at Sunday River.

Anthony Dilisio of Swampscott and Patrick O'Brien of Avon, Conn., each shot 73 to lead the way in a qualifier at Blissful Meadow in Uxbridge for the upcoming GolfWeek/FCWT Invitational.

Miscellany
