Pros
No assist needed
Marc Spencer of the Atkinson Resort & CC in New Hampshire shot 70-69 to rally for a one-stroke win in the NEPGA Assistants Championship at Tedesco CC in Marblehead. Todd Cook of the host course held the first-round lead, but backed up a 68 with a 72 -140 to finish second. Jeffrey Martin of Point Judith CC in Rhode Island shot 73-69 to finish third, while Matthew Baran of Oyster Harbors (71-72) was fourth.

Jeff Dantas of Aero Indoor Golf shot 69 to share low pro honors with Bob Pandolfi of Bayberry Hills and Bob Giusti of the Country Club of Halifax in a Cape Cod Pro-Am at Bayberry Hills. Justin Peters of Pembroke shot 73-73-68 -214 to finish tied for seventh in a Gateway Tour stop in Stuart, Fla. With $72,672 in earnings, the onetime Massachusetts Golf Association Player of the Year moved to No. 6 on the money list.

Rob Oppenheim of Andover finished joint 52d in the Canadian Tour Championship in Barrie, Ontario.

Seniors
Keller hangs on

A birdie-birdie start got him off to a torrid front nine and though he stumbled a bit coming home, Joe Keller of the Oyster Harbors Club had enough in the tank to shoot 1-under 70 and win the rain-shortened New England Senior Championship at the Woodstock Inn in Vermont. Keller was among those caught in a torrential storm Tuesday that relegated the competition to just 18 holes. Keller went out in 4-under 31, then held on coming home. Don Reid of Nashua, N.H., Steven Birnbaum of Baker Hill GC, and Daniel Arvanitis of Derryfield CC all shot 71 to tie for second.

The entry deadline is 5 p.m. tomorrow for the 10th Cape Cod Senior Open, which is scheduled for Tuesday (at Cape Cod CC) and Wednesday (Hyannis GC). Players can enter via the website (www.ccopen.com) or by calling 508-775-1798.

Women
Welch: Solid effort
Tracy Welch of Winchester CC shot 76-77 to finish T-19, while Tara Joy-Connelly of Cohasset GC (80-78) was tied for 48th as both made it into match play at the US Women's Mid-Amateur Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich. That's as far as they got, however, as both were upended in first-round matches. Joy-Connelly squared her match at the 17th, but lost the 18th, while Welch fell, 5 and 4. Marion Webster of Concord (82-79) and Pam Kuong of Wellesley (78-88) missed the cut.

Amateurs
Trio advanced
From a lengthy list of locals who competed in the US Mid-Amateur Championship in Milwaukee, only Jack Kearney of East Longmeadow (72-74), Ricky Jones of Thomaston, Maine (71-75), and Austin Eaton of North Sutton, N.H. (72-74) advanced to match play. Missing the cut were Brian Higgins of Bellingham, Joe Cunningham of Chestnut Hill, Steve Tasho of Easton, Bill Cunningham and Brian Foley of Longmeadow, and Justin Sharaf of Danvers, who was the youngest competitor in the field. Also, William Hadden of Manchester, Vt., Joseph Alvarez of Hampden, Maine, and Michael Caprio of Rumford, R.I., all missed the cut. While Eaton was ousted in the first round, Kearney and Jones both prevailed by 1-up scores before each fell in Round 2. Kearney had a 1-up lead through eight before losing the ninth, 11th, and 14th holes to birdies in a 2-and-1 defeat; Jones never had a lead as he lost, 3 and 2.

Jeff Mucciarone of Westwood stormed to a six-stroke win on the strength of a 72 in a Boston Amateur Golf Society tournament at Crumpin-Fox GC in Bernardston. At Indian Pond CC in Kingston, Mark Dwyer of Marshfield shot 78 for a two-stroke victory.

Chris Needham shot 77 to win a Tour of Greater Boston tournament at Cyprian Keyes GC in Boylston.

The Norfolk County Two-Ball Championship is scheduled for Oct. 11-12 at Presidents GC in Quincy.

People
Family plan
Congratulations to former Boston Globe compositor Jack Burke of Braintree, who used a 7-wood to ace the 130-yard, par-3 12th hole at Braintree Municipal GC. His daughter, Diane, had a hole-in-one at the same hole several years ago.

Miscellany
Scramble time
Bob Beach will be honored later this year as the New England PGA Professional of the Year and for a reminder why, there's the eighth annual NEPGA Special Olympics Scramble. It will be held Sunday at Braintree Municipal GC where Beach devotes endless hours to junior golf and those with special needs. For information, call the pro shop at 781-843-6513, ext. 2.

The famed "Tiger Tees" at the International Golf Club's Pines Course in Bolton are usually reserved for special occasions, such as the Sept. 29 "Tame the Tigers" Jimmy Fund event hosted by WEEI's John Dennis. He will take on a golf course that will be stretched to roughly 8,300 yards and include such demanding challenges as the 715-yard, par-6 fifth. Members of the Pinnacle Long Drive Team will be on hand to provide help and a reception and auction will follow the tournament. Tickets are $500, with proceeds benefiting the Dana-Farber Institute. For information, go to www.tamethetigers.org or call 1-866-521-GOLF.
