Roenick scores on rebound
NHL star Jeremy Roenick has stepped in and purchased Pembroke Country Club and already has plans in place to upgrade the facility. Roenick, who grew up in Marshfield, starred at Thayer Academy in Braintree, and currently plays for the San Jose Sharks, swooped in after the property foreclosed and purchased it for $4.4 million from Norwood Cooperative Bank, which held the mortgage. "It was sad that the bank had it, not knowing what would happen to it," Roenick told Globe reporter Emily Sweeney. "Pembroke Country Club was one of my favorite courses. It's not a generic public course. It's a beautiful layout." Work is being done on the course and banquet hall, with hopes of opening April 1.TCC to host State Amateur

The Red Tail is on top
Red Tail GC in Devens, which will host the US Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in June, has been selected by Golfweek magazine as the best public course in Massachusetts. Crumpin-Fox in Bernardston was second, followed by Cape Cod National in Brewster, Farm's Neck on Martha's Vineyard, both of the Pinehills courses in Plymouth (Nicklaus fifth, Jones sixth), The Ranch in Southwick, George Wright in Hyde Park, Shaker Hills in Harvard, and Dennis Pines.End of era
The game suffered a heavy loss with the recent death of Janice Gannon Vance, the first executive director of the Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts. A longtime member of Gannon GC in Lynn, named after her father, Gannon Vance played in a number of WGAM events before joining its staff in 1991 as executive secretary. The position was renamed executive director in 1994, and Gannon Vance held the title until 2005. She died March 13 at age 65 . . . The Executive Women's Golf Association will host a kickoff brunch Saturday at the Westin Waltham Hotel. EWGA provides educational and playing opportunities for women of all skill levels.
