Carey, Foley roll to fore in Norfolk

Kevin Carey, the 2003 winner, had a 2-under-par 68 yesterday at Presidents Golf Course in Quincy to tie R.J. Foley for the first-round lead of the Norfolk County Classic.

Carey, who plays out of Dennis Pines, made five birdies, including one on the par-3 18th where he holed an 8-foot putt.

"I'm very happy with my play. It's a good start," said Carey, who teamed with Joe Walker last month to win their sixth Seagulls Fourball Championship in Hyannisport.

Carey and Foley lead Boston College sophomore Craig Kublin by one shot. Frank Vana of Marlborough Country Club, the 1997 tournament winner and a nine-time Massachusetts Golf Association player of the year, also birdied the 18th to shoot 70, tied for fourth with Ryan Riley.

PGA - Defending champion Zach Johnson matched the La Cantera course record with a 10-under 60 to take a three-stroke lead in the suspended third round of the rain-soaked Texas Open in San Antonio.

Johnson holed out from 84 yards for an eagle on the par-4 seventh and had eight birdies on the soggy course in the round interrupted by a five-hour rain delay. He tapped in for par on 18 seconds after the horn blew and darkness suspended play.

Paul Goydos and three-time champion Justin Leonard were 12 under through 12 holes. They'll resume the round this morning.

"I hit a lot of quality shots. I think I had to get up and down twice for par," Johnson said. "I don't think I missed a green on the backside."

A storm dumped more than 2 inches of rain, causing the longest delay on the PGA Tour this year. Fourteen players will finish the third round today.

Marc Leishman and Scott Sterling were 11 under when play was suspended.

LPGA - Suzann Pettersen and Ji Young Oh shot 3-under 69s to take a one-stroke lead over Brittany Lincicome (72) after three rounds of the $2 million Sybase Classic in Clifton, N.J., that seemingly will have a new champion with Lorena Ochoa 10 shots back.

Pettersen and Oh stand at 12-under 204.

Michelle Wie, who has not won since turning pro in 2006, shot a 69 and stands three shots back.

If Wie is going to win, she will have to putt better. She missed seven putts of 10 feet or less in the second round and she missed four of 4 feet or less yesterday.

Champions - Gene Jones and Keith Fergus led at 10 under when play was suspended by rain in the second round of the Regions Charity Classic at Hoover, Ala., ending a day that was dominated by the weather.

Rain had halted play for 3 hours 33 minutes in the morning and it was suspended with the threat of storms looming after Jones was 7 under through 14 holes in his second round. Fergus had finished the front nine in 4 under to join him atop the leaderboard.

European - Irish amateur Shane Lowry (1-under 71) bogeyed the final hole on a blustery day to fall into a tie for the lead with Robert Rock (69) at 16-under 200 after three rounds of the Irish Open at Baltray. Play was delayed more than five hours because of high winds.
