Six former champions headline the field for the 101st Massachusetts Amateur Championship, which begins Monday at The Country Club in Brookline. The 144-man field will be cut to the low 32 after Tuesday’s second round of stroke play, with match play beginning Wednesday. The 36-hole championship match is scheduled for July 17. Defending champion John Hadges will attempt to become the 10th in tournament history to win in consecutive years; Frank Vana Jr., also in the field, was the most recent to do it, in 2004-05. Other past champions competing include Steve Tasho, Ben Spitz, Burgess Houston, and Andy Drohen, who won in 2004, the last time the tournament was held at The Country Club.

Pros
Tearing up Minors
The Minor League Golf Tour is taking a two-week break, but Justin Peters of Pembroke is arguably the hottest player. He won three times in June, which mostly operates one-day tournaments around Florida. Peters won two one-day events, and also shot 64-67 to capture the two-day Protogolf Open, which paid $1,700 to the winner. Peters is fourth on the money list this season with $11,356.

Ahead of the game
John Hickson of Dick’s Sporting Goods, who competed last week at the PGA Professional National Championship in New Mexico, was co-medalist at the New England PGA’s Ahead stroke-play event Monday at Woodstock Country Club in Vermont. Hickson and John Fields of Belmont each finished at 6-under 64. Fields teamed with R.J. Austin (Sugarbush) to tie for the low score (8-under 62) in the pro-pro event with Todd Cook (Milton Hoosic Club) and Steve Bramlett (Kernwood). In the seniors division, Bob Darling of Fox Ridge won with a 2-under 70.
