Five juniors from Massachusetts are featured in the 18-player team representing New England in the John D. Mineck N.H. surprise
Team New Hampshire used a final-round comeback to end Connecticut’s five-year run at the New England Junior Championship, winning by five strokes at Old Marsh Country Club in Wells, Maine. Nick Fairweather finished third to lead New Hampshire; Maine’s Seth Sweet was the individual champion, winning by five strokes with rounds of 72-79-71. Maine was third, followed by Massachusetts, Vermont, and Rhode Island. Chris Melvin of Walpole led the Bay State, tying for 11th (71-80-84) . . . Nick McLaughlin of New Castle, N.H., needed a one-hole playoff, but earned his first American Junior Golf Association title with a victory in Elverson, Pa. The 15-year-old had a three-round total of 1-over 211 on the North Course at Stonewall Links, then made a par on the first extra hole to edge Zachary Herr of New Hope, Pa. Michael Werenski of South Hadley finished third, four strokes back . . . Stephanie Silva of Mansfield and Isabel Southard of Sharon shot a better-ball 71 at Bellevue Golf Club to win the Mowatt Trophy, a Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts event. In the junior/junior division, played as a scramble, the team of Amanda Cameron (Canton), Anna Haynes (Hopedale), and Michaela Abbott (Milton) won with a score of 41. Patrice Power (Newton), Kathryn Elliott (Natick), Alexa Tsay (Needham), and Gabrielle Shieh (Carlisle) captured the mite division with a 33.WOMEN
Woodland wonders
Lindsay Muse and Maura Brown from Woodland Golf Club needed 20 holes to win the WGAM’s Prunaret Cup. Muse and Brown defeated Penny Locke (Marshfield) and Kristen Lilly (Cohasset).PROS
Spence, Durocher reign
Scott Spence (Carnegie Abbey) had a 66 to win low pro honors at the NEPGA’s Joey Coakley Pro-Am at Charles River Country Club. Spence won by three over Paul Parajeckas (Pleasant Valley) and John Rainone (North Kingstown). Rainone teamed with Rich Richter, Ken Spencer, and Scott Nielsen to shoot 63 and win by two. In the Coakley event held at Woodland, Rick Durocher (Concord) won by four shots with a 69, ahead of Frank Dully (Kernwood) and Thomas Gillis (NEPGA). The Concord Country Club team of Bret Gracey, Rick Davis, Maurizio Arcoccio, and Chris Gove had a 65 to win by two . . . Jerry Courville had an eagle and five birdies, shooting a 6-under 65, to win the N.E. Senior Tour event at Crystal Lake Golf Club in Mapleville, R.I., by six strokes. Courville, of Westport, Conn., earned $525 for the victory. Dennis Sales of Cumberland, R.I., also shot 65 to win the N.E. Golf Tour event at Crystal Lake. Sales took home $400.MISCELLANY
Stone Cup on deck
The Stone Cup (state mixed foursomes championship) is Aug. 24-26 at Crumpin-Fox in Bernardston . . . Marty Burke was named head golf coach at Bentley University.
