Haas surges to win after Watson fades

Jay Haas charged past Tom Watson to win the Senior Players Championship by a stroke yesterday, birdieing the 18th hole to match the course record with a 6-under-par 64 at Baltimore Country Club in the final Champions Tour major of the season. Watson, 60, was trying to become the oldest major winner on the 50-and-over tour. But after making only one bogey in the first three rounds, he had three in the final round en route to a 70. Haas finished at 13-under 267 for his third Senior major title . . . Lorena Ochoa snapped an 11-start winless streak, overcoming early troubles to shoot a 2-under 70 for a four-stroke victory over Michelle Wie and Brittany Lang to defend her Navistar LPGA Classic title in Prattville, Ala. Wie overcame a gimpy left ankle to close with a 66, while Lang had a 70. Fourteen-year-old Alexis Thompson, who opened with rounds of 65 and 69 to share the second-round lead, shot her second straight 74 to tie for 27th at 6 under.

Kuchar, Taylor to continue playoff today
Matt Kuchar and Vaughn Taylor were tied after two holes in a sudden-death playoff at the Turning Stone Resort Championship when play was suspended in Verona, N.Y., because of darkness, forcing a finish today. They birdied the first extra hole and parred the second . . . Luke Donald shot an 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy and Simon Dyson in the weather-delayed third round of the Dunhill Links Championship in St. Andrews, Scotland . . . Walker Cup player Nathan Smith (4-under 68) and Mike McCoy (1-over 70) shared medalist honors in the US Mid-Amateur Championship at The Kiawah Island Club in South Carolina, finishing two rounds of stroke-play qualifying at 3-under 140 . . . Mina Hardin shot a 3-under 69 to share medalist honors with three others in the US Women’s Mid-Amateur in Ocala, Fla. Hardin matched Laura Ladden, Jennifer Lucas, and Meghan Stasi at 2-over 146 . . . Tim Thelen shattered the Callaway Golf PGA Assistant Championship scoring record, shooting a 4-under 68 to finish at 23-under 265 - seven strokes ahead of second-place Sean Dougherty in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Marlins’ Gonzalez no cinch to return
Marlins president David Samson said manager Fredi Gonzalez will be evaluated this week, leaving the winningest manager in team history with no guarantee he’ll return for 2010. Samson also said he was unaware of any talks between Florida and former Mets manager Bobby Valentine. ESPN.com reported that Valentine, who recently ended a six-year run as manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s Pacific League, is in talks about taking a position with the Marlins. Gonzalez, who is signed through 2011, passed Jack McKeon for most wins by a manager in team history with his 242d Saturday . . . General manager Doug Melvin said manager Ken Macha will return for the second season of his two-year contract. The Brewers finished 80-82 . . . Reds righthander Bronson Arroyo has decided against surgery on his right wrist for the carpal tunnel syndrome that has nagged him for years but improved this season when he gave up playing the guitar. He led the Reds with 15 wins this season and had a 3.84 ERA. Arroyo, 32, pitched a team-high 220 1/3 innings despite the problem, which flared up during spring training . . . Athletics righthander Clay Mortensen was arrested and detained Saturday night in Santa Clara County for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Catchings, Fever one win from crown
Tamika Catchings had 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists as the Fever moved within one victory of the WNBA title with an 86-85 win over the Phoenix Mercury in Game 3 of the finals in Indianapolis. The Mercury’s Tangela Smith missed a jumper from the foul line as time expired. The Fever can clinch their first championship with a win at home Wednesday. Ebony Hoffman led the Fever with 18 points and Cappie Pondexter led Phoenix with 23. The Mercury’s Diana Taurasi, the league’s MVP, scored 18 points but shot 6 for 16 from the field.

Dynamo secure playoff berth with tie
The Dynamo clinched a playoff berth but missed a chance to take over sole possession of first in the Western Conference after blowing a second-half lead in a 1-1 tie against the Kansas City Wizards in Houston. Luis Angel Landin’s goal put Houston ahead in the 26th minute, but Kansas City’s Zoltan Hercegfalvi scored in the 73d minute. Houston (12-8-8) is tied with Los Angeles at 44 points . . . Jason Hartmann of Concord won the Twin Cities Marathon in St. Paul, finishing in 2 hours 12 minutes 16 seconds. Ilsa Paulson of New York took the women’s race in 2:31.49, qualifying her for the 2012 US Olympic trials . . . Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko defeated Fernando Verdasco, 6-4, 7-5, to win the Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur . . . Sea the Stars made history by winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Longchamp, France, becoming the first horse to win three of Europe’s top races. The 3-year-old colt had previously won the 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby.
