Play suspended

Heavy rain has forced a suspension of play at the US Open. The horn sounded at 10:15 a.m., not because lightning has been detected, but because Bethpage Black has been pelted by steady rain since 6:30 a.m. Standing water on greens and in fairways made it impossible to continue, forcing the stoppage. With rain expected the rest of the day, it could be quite some time before play resumes.

Half of the field is on the golf course, with nobody completing more than 12 holes. Four relatively unknown players share the lead at 1-under: Jeff Brehaut, Johan Edfors, Andrew Parr, and Ryan Spears.

Tiger Woods got off to a shaky start, badly pulling his drive on the first hole but salvaging a par. He made a mess of the par-4 fifth hole, taking a double-bogey 6, but came right back and birdied the short par-4 sixth. The horn sounded with Woods, Padraig Harrington, and Angel Cabrera playing the seventh hole.

New Bedford native Kevin Silva, playing in his second straight US Open, bogeyed No. 10, his first hole, and made a par on the 11th. Michael Welch of Quincy, making his US Open debut, has a 2:42 p.m. tee time. With rain falling and play suspended, that'll be pushed back now, maybe until tomorrow.
