Furyk DQ'd from Barclays
It's been raining all morning in Paramus, N.J., so maybe Jim Furyk is better off not playing in The Barclays pro-am. Then again, his failure to get to the course in time today has resulted in his disqualification from the first of four FedEx Cup events.
Furyk lost his spot in the $7.5 million tournament when he overslept and didn't get to Ridgewood Country Club in time for his 7:30 a.m. pro-am tee time. Unless the reason is an injury or family emergency, missing a pro-am tee time brings an automatic disqualification from the tournament. Furyk said he sets his alarm using his cellphone, but the phone lost power overnight. He told PGA Tour rules official Slugger White that he woke up at 7:23 a.m., and arrived at the golf course 12 minutes later. Too late.
"He said 'Disqualified?' and I said 'Yes, I'm sorry.' It's unfortunate for Jim," said White. "A commitment to play in the tournament is a commitment to play in the pro-am."
While unable to compete for the $1.35 million first prize, Furyk is assured of continuing on in the playoffs. He's third in the FedEx Cup points standings.
