Thomas Vanek scored twice to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 2-1 win over the Canadiens on Saturday night in Montreal.
It was the Sabres’ third straight win in a run that began with an overtime victory in Montreal on Tuesday. Ryan Miller stopped 39 shots in this one for Buffalo. Michael Ryder scored the lone goal for Montreal, and Carey Price made 16 saves.
The Sabres broke the scoreless deadlock midway through the second period during a five-on-three power play. Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff fired a shot from the point that deflected in off Vanek for his 15th of the season.
Vanek struck again in the final minute of the second. Taking a pass from Tyler Ennis, Vanek finished the play with some slick stick work to beat Price a second time.
Senators 5, Lightning 3 — Jakob Silfverberg, Eric Gryba, Guillaume Latendresse, and Daniel Alfredsson scored in the first period, and host Ottawa held off Tampa Bay.
Alfredsson also had an empty-net goal in the final minute. Robin Lehner made 29 saves. Tyler Johnson scored twice in the third period for Tampa Bay, and Teddy Purcell made it 4-3 with 1:59 remaining.
Devils 2, Panthers 1 — Travis Zajac set up two goals, and New Jersey rode another solid performance by Martin Brodeur in a victory over Florida in Newark.
Patrik Elias and David Clarkson scored for New Jersey, and Brodeur had 17 saves as the Devils won their second straight since their goalie returned after being sidelined a month with a pinched nerve in his neck. Devils star forward Ilya Kovalchuk missed the final 10 minutes after crashing into the boards.
Wild 2, Sharks 0 — Niklas Backstrom made 33 saves for his first shutout of the season and Ryan Suter had two assists, leading Minnesota past San Jose in St. Paul for the Wild’s fifth straight victory. Zach Parise and Jared Spurgeon scored for Minnesota.
Predators 5, Blue Jackets 2 — Taylor Beck had a goal and an assist in host Nashville’s four-goal first period in a win over Columbus.
R.J. Umberger and Artem Anisimov had goals for the Blue Jackets, whose franchise-record streak of earning at least one point ended at 12 games.
Stars 5, Avalanche 2 — Derek Roy, Eric Nystrom, and Jaromir Jagr each had a goal and an assist to lead Dallas over visiting Colorado.
Rookie Jordie Benn got his first NHL goal and added three assists. Paul Stastny and P.A. Parenteau scored for Colorado.
Blues 3, Oilers 0 — Jaroslav Halak made 19 saves for his third shutout of the season, and Chris Stewart, Alexander Steen, and T.J. Oshie scored in St. Louis’s victory over host Edmonton.
Canucks 1, Kings 0 — Cory Schneider made 20 saves en route to his sixth NHL shutout, Mason Raymond scored in the first period, and Vancouver beat host Los Angeles for its third straight victory.
