RALEIGH, N.C. — The Bruins could have clinched a playoff spot with just 1 point. Instead, they dropped a result to one of the league’s down-and-out clubs.
Carolina snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday with a 4-2 win over the Bruins at PNC Arena.
Former Bruin Joe Corvo gave Carolina the go-ahead goal at 9:36 of the third with a power-play strike. Chris Kelly was in the box for a kneeing penalty. Jiri Tlusty scored an empty-net goal with 28.1 seconds left.
The Hurricanes broke a 1-1 tie at 14:04 of the second period. Eric Staal slipped behind the Bruins defense, fished the puck off the wall behind the net, and threw a blind backhand pass out front. Tlusty was on the receiving end and snapped a shot past Tuukka Rask (34 saves).
The Bruins pulled even after a bad line change by the Hurricanes. Andrew Ference stood up Alexander Semin in the neutral zone and chipped the puck forward to Tyler Seguin. With the still-changing Hurricanes out of position, Seguin pulled away and snapped a shot over Justin Peters’s glove at 17:57.
Peters (28 saves) made a highlight stop at 10:14 of the second. David Krejci sent a cross-crease pass to Jaromir Jagr, who had a wide-open net. But Peters sprawled out and gloved the shot at the last moment.
The Bruins opened the scoring at 6:07 of the first period. After Gregory Campbell picked off a Tim Gleason clearing attempt, the Bruins used their cycle game. Campbell and Jagr controlled the puck along the boards. Jagr connected with Matt Bartkowski at the left point. With Milan Lucic setting a screen on Peters, Bartkowski’s shot appeared to bounce off the left wing’s skate and into the net. It was Lucic’s first goal since March 25.
The Hurricanes evened the score with a last-minute power-play goal. With Lucic off for interference, Jeff Skinner, from below the goal line, banked in the puck off Rask at 19:24.
There were three fights in the first. Shawn Thornton squared off with Kevin Westgarth at 14:14, Jay Harrison started a scrap with Zdeno Chara at 18:41, and Campbell and Nicolas Blanchard capped the rough stuff at 19:32.
