The New Jersey Devils acquired goalie Cory Schneider from the Vancouver Canucks for the ninth overall pick in Sunday’s NHL draft in Newark.
The Canucks then selected center Bo Horvat.
Schneider, a native of Marblehead, seems in line to be the eventual successor to Martin Brodeur in net. Schneider was on the market once the Canucks were unable to trade high-priced goalie Roberto Luongo.
Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis had been wrestling with a tough goaltender situation for some time. Both Schneider and Luongo have the skill sets to be full-time starters. But as the team moves forward into a new era with new coach John Tortorella behind the bench, it was Schneider who was moved out. Full story for BostonGlobe.com subscribers.
