Flyers cooking at home

Philadelphia story keeps getting better

Jeff Hackett made 24 saves, Sami Kapanen broke a scoreless tie early in the third period, and the Philadelphia Flyers won their sixth straight game to remain unbeaten at home with a 4-0 victory last night over the Atlanta Thrashers.

Philadelphia scored all of its goals in the final period to help Hackett pick up his third shutout of the season and the 26th of his career.

Philadelphia's home unbeaten streak reached a league-best nine games (7-0-2), making it the second longest in franchise history. The 1979-80 team set an NHL record with 26 straight home games without a loss.

Kapanen scored his third goal when he lifted a rebound over a sprawling Byron Dafoe, who made 31 saves -- many of them spectacular.

Simon Gagne, John LeClair, and Jeremy Roenick also scored for the Flyers, whose streak is their longest since winning six straight last March.

Devils 5, Rangers 0 -- Martin Brodeur made 18 saves for his 67th career shutout, leading New Jersey over New York in East Rutherford, N.J. Brodeur moved one shutout ahead of Toronto's Ed Belfour for the top spot among active players.

Red Wings 1, Wild 1 -- Dominik Hasek made 25 saves and Steve Yzerman scored a third-period goal as visiting Detroit tied Minnesota. Andrew Brunette scored on a power play in the second period for Minnesota, which again got a stellar effort from goalie Dwayne Roloson and stopped Detroit's three-game winning streak.

Avalanche 3, Stars 0 -- David Aebischer stopped 29 shots for his second shutout, and Teemu Selanne and Steve Konowalchuk scored 50 seconds apart in the second period to lead host Colorado past Dallas. Alex Tanguay also scored for Colorado, which earned a point for the seventh straight game (5-0-1-1).

Blues 1, Kings 0 -- In Los Angeles, Chris Osgood recorded his 40th career shutout and Pavol Demitra scored in the first period in St. Louis's fifth straight victory. The Blues, who won for the ninth time in 10 games, played without the suspended Keith Tkachuk and Doug Weight.

Canadiens 3, Senators 2 -- Jan Bulis scored his second goal of the game with 7:59 left and Jose Theodore made 38 saves to lead visiting Montreal over Ottawa.

Sharks 2, Maple Leafs 2 -- Patrick Marleau and Nils Ekman scored early in the third period as host San Jose rallied to tie Toronto.

Panthers 3, Penguins 2 -- In Pittsburgh, Valeri Bure and Kristian Huselius each had a goal and an assist, and Florida extended its winning streak against the Penguins to seven games.

Oilers 2, Flames 1 -- Ryan Smyth deflected a pass from Mike York past Jamie McLennan with 16 seconds left in overtime and Ty Conklin stopped 33 shots as Edmonton earned its first win in four home games against Calgary.

Predators 4, Islanders 3 -- Martin Erat had a goal and two assists, and Marek Zidlicky and Vladimir Orszagh each scored power-play goals in host Nashville's victory over the Islanders.
