NHL ROUNDUP
Rangers do homework
By Associated Press, 11/24/2003
Martin Rucinsky had a goal and three assists, and Brian Leetch had a goal and assist for his first multipoint game this season as the Rangers snapped a four-game winless streak with a 6-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators last night in New York.
Leetch scored his second goal of the season in the second period and set up Rucinsky in the first for the Rangers, who returned home following an 0-2-2 road trip in which they scored only seven goals. Leetch was playing in just his 11th game this season after missing the first nine because of an ankle injury.
Rangers captain Mark Messier was in the lineup, but off the scoresheet a day after he took part in the outdoor old-timers game in Edmonton, Alberta.
Lightning 0, Hurricanes 0 -- Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 37 shots as visiting Tampa Bay ran its unbeaten streak to four straight games in a scoreless tie with Carolina. Carolina had a goal disallowed 1:21 into overtime when officials ruled Rod Brind'Amour used a high stick to deflect the puck in.
Khabibulin recorded his 34th career shutout and 13th with Tampa Bay, moving him ahead of Daren Puppa for the most in franchise history. He had to make eight saves in the extra period to set the mark.
Thrashers 1, Coyotes 0 -- Marc Savard, who missed nine games with an ankle injury, scored in his return as host Atlanta beat Phoenix to extend its franchise-record winning streak to four. Pasi Nurminen made 21 saves for his second shutout of the season.
