Rangers: Double whammy

Olaf Kolzig made 32 saves last night and the Washington Capitals held on for a 2-1 win at Madison Square Garden over the New York Rangers, who lost Eric Lindros to another concussion.

Jeff Halpern and Trent Whitfield scored as Washington ended a three-game losing streak and won for the first time in seven road games (1-4-1-1). Kolzig made 19 saves in the third period, shutting out star forward Jaromir Jagr only five days after the Capitals traded him to New York.

Martin Rucinsky scored for the Rangers, who lost for the fifth time in six games.

Lindros, plagued by concussions throughout his career, took a hard hit along the boards from Capitals defenseman Jason Doig in the second period.

On his next shift, Lindros took the faceoff and immediately dropped his gloves and went after Doig. After a brief scuffle, Lindros pinned Doig to the ice. Both received fighting majors at 10:53.

Lindros did not return for the third period and the Rangers said he would be reevaluated today.

In his third season with the Rangers, the 1995 NHL MVP has been playing his best hockey in years. He has 10 goals and 22 assists in 39 games.

The All-Star center was traded to New York by Philadelphia after sitting out a season because of a bitter feud with Flyers general manager Bob Clarke and while recovering from his seventh career concussion.

Stars 5, Senators 3 -- Sergei Zubov scored the tiebreaking goal from center ice with 3:07 left and host Dallas rallied from two goals down in the third period.

Zubov dumped the puck toward the Ottawa net from just inside the red line and Ottawa goaltender Patrick Lalime fumbled the puck, which skittered over the goal line.

Bill Guerin skated to the net to tap the puck over the line and was originally credited with the goal. But after the game, the official scorer credited Zubov with his sixth goal.

Scott Young added an insurance goal 74 seconds later, giving Dallas a 5-3 edge with 1:53 remaining.

Flyers 3, Panthers 3 -- Kristian Huselius scored with 8:55 left in the third period, giving host Florida a tie against Philadelphia.

Andreas Lilja and Juraj Kolnik also scored for the Panthers, who had lost seven consecutive home games against the Flyers.

Rookie defenseman Joni Pitkanen had the first two-goal game of his NHL career and Eric Weinrich also scored for the Flyers, who have lost only once in their last seven games (5-1-1). The Flyers are unbeaten in their last four on the road (3-0-1).

Sharks 4, Flames 1 -- Patrick Marleau scored two goals on assists by Marco Sturm to lead host San Jose to its sixth victory in seven games.

Kings 4, Mighty Ducks 3 -- Joe Corvo scored 2:37 into overtime, giving visiting Los Angeles the win over Anaheim.

Thrashers 1, Blues 1 -- Jeff Cowan scored with 2:24 left in regulation and host Atlanta, bolstered by the return of Dany Heatley, managed a tie with St. Louis.
