Lightning overpower the Leafs

Former Maple Leafs Fredrik Modin and Dave Andreychuk scored power-play goals, and the Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay Lightning pounded host Toronto, 7-2, last night.

The Lightning remained 1 point ahead of Philadelphia and 2 in front of the Bruins for first place in the conference with 99 points. Martin St. Louis picked up three assists to give him 89 points, tops in the NHL, and a franchise high for the Lightning.

Tampa Bay, which had lost four of five games, also took a 5-point lead on the Leafs.

The Maple Leafs fell 3 points behind Boston for first in the Northeast Division.

Flyers 4, Hurricanes 2 -- Branko Radivojevic had a goal and an assist, and Simon Gagne also scored to lead Philadelphia over host Carolina.Carolina was eliminated from playoff contention when the Islanders beat the Capitals.

Sean Burke stopped 26 shots to pick up his 303rd win, moving him past Turk Broda and into 18th place on the NHL's career list.

Devils 4, Panthers 3 -- Martin Brodeur reached the 400-career victory mark faster than any goalie in history as visiting New Jersey beat Florida in overtime on Scott Niedermayer's goal, clinching a playoff spot for the eighth straight year. Brodeur made 21 saves to improve his career record to 400-215-105 in 12 seasons.

Islanders 3, Capitals 0 -- Rick DiPietro made 17 saves for his second straight shutout, and Alexei Yashin had a goal and assist in New York's victory over visiting Washington.The Islanders extended their lead over Buffalo to 8 points for eighth in the East.

Sharks 5, Red Wings 2 -- Jonathan Cheechoo scored two goals and Evgeni Nabokov stopped 37 shots, leading host San Jose over Detroit in a meeting of division leaders.

Blackhawks 2, Avalanche 2 -- Tyler Arnason scored Chicago's second goal of the third period with 1:40 left and Michael Leighton stopped 41 shots, lifting the Blackhawks into a tie at Colorado.

Mighty Ducks 4, Predators 1 -- Sandis Ozolinsh had a power-play goal and Petr Sykora also scored, and visiting Anaheim beat Nashville for its fourth victory in five games.

Penguins 5, Rangers 2 -- Lasse Pirjeta had two goals and an assist and Jean-Sebastien Aubin made 35 saves as Pittsburgh defeated host New York, which lost its seventh straight.
