Jagr turns on power to spark the Rangers

Jaromir Jagr scored twice on two-man power plays in a 42-second span, and Henrik Lundqvist made 23 saves for his first NHL shutout in the Rangers' 4-0 victory over the Florida Panthers last night at New York.

Jagr scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season -- all on the power play -- on nearly identical plays late in the second period to help the Atlantic Division-leading Rangers tie Ottawa for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with 10 points.

Petr Prucha added his first NHL goal and fellow rookie Fedor Tyutin also scored for New York, which has earned points in all but one of its seven games this season. The Rangers are 4-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 at home.

Lundqvist, starting for the Rangers with Kevin Weekes sidelined by a groin injury, has won three straight games after opening his NHL career with an overtime loss to New Jersey.

Lundqvist was rarely tested, controlled his rebounds, and got plenty of help from his defensemen.

Jagr gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead with 5:30 left in the second period, beating Roberto Luongo with a one-timer from the high slot with Florida's Olli Jokinen and Alexander Karpovtsev serving penalties. Fifteen seconds after Branislav Mezei was sent off for tripping to set up a second two-man advantage, Jagr fired in another one-timer from the high slot.

Red Wings 3, Sharks 2 -- Jiri Fischer's goal with 50.9 seconds left in overtime gave host Detroit the win over San Jose.

Fischer's wrist shot from the top of the left circle beat goalie Evgeni Nabokov just under the crossbar. It was his third goal of the season.

Brendan Shanahan and Mikael Samuelsson scored power-play goals for the Red Wings, and goalie Manny Legace made 26 saves.

Coyotes 2, Flames 0 -- Curtis Joseph recorded 25 saves for his 44th career shutout as visiting Phoenix prevailed.

Mike Ricci scored with 7:14 left in the third period to break the scoreless tie. A hard shot from Fredrik Sjostrom drifted over the net but the puck caromed off the end boards and Ricci knocked the rebound past goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.

Boyd Devereaux added an empty net goal with 36 seconds left.
