Laaksonen picks up Colorado in shootout

Antti Laaksonen was ready -- and relaxed -- when he finally got his turn in the seventh round of a shootout.

The Colorado forward scored the only shootout goal last night to give the Avalanche a 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils in East Rutherford, N.J. Laaksonen beat Martin Brodeur with a high backhander to help Colorado win on a night in which it squandered a 3-0 lead.

''Being that late in the shootout, I didn't feel any pressure," Laaksonen said. ''The first three guys have all the pressure to score."

Laaksonen scored after Joe Sakic, Marek Svatos, Milan Hejduk, Alex Tanguay, Pierre Turgeon, and Andrew Brunette missed for Colorado.

Vitaly Kolesnik stopped New Jersey's Viktor Kozlov, Brian Gionta, Scott Gomez, Alexander Mogilny, Sergei Brylin, John Madden, and Jamie Langenbrunner.

In regulation, Brunette had two goals and Sakic also scored as Colorado jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Jay Pandolfo, Gionta, and Gomez scored for New Jersey, which dropped its third straight game.

Gomez sent the game into overtime, scoring at 10:09 of the third period with a deflection of Richard Matvichuk's point shot.

Canucks 3, Senators 2 -- Daniel Sedin beat Ottawa's Dominik Hasek in the fourth round of a shootout as Vancouver improved to an NHL-best 13-1 at home.

After Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson and Vancouver's Todd Bertuzzi traded goals in the second round of the shootout, Canucks goalie Alex Auld stopped Jason Spezza and Mike Fischer, setting the stage for Sedin.

Henrik Sedin and Markus Naslund scored in regulation to help the Canucks hand the Senators just their fifth loss of the season. Peter Schaefer and Andrej Meszaros scored for Ottawa.

Red Wings 4, Capitals 3 -- Henrik Zetterberg scored two power-play goals and Nicklas Lidstrom added a goal and two assists to propel Detroit in Washington.

Rookie Alexander Ovechkin had a goal and an assist for the Capitals.

Thrashers 5, Blue Jackets 2 -- Ronald Petrovicky finished off his first three-goal game with an empty-net goal and host Atlanta snapped a five-game losing streak.
