Devils lean on Brodeur

Goalie again hits 30-win plateau

Martin Brodeur made 28 saves, extending his NHL record for consecutive 30-win seasons to 11, and the New Jersey Devils beat the Lightning, 2-0, last night in Tampa.

Brodeur (30-13-4) also recorded his NHL-best ninth shutout this season and the 89th of his career.

"I just want to win," Brodeur said. "Every year, I go in and I want to win 30 games. That's my first goal. I'm happy that it happened so quickly."

Brian Gionta and Jay Pandolfo scored for the Devils, who are 11-1-2 over the last 14 games.

Tampa Bay goalie Johan Holmqvist stopped 23 shots as the Lightning lost for just the second time in their past nine games.

Gionta put New Jersey ahead, 1-0, with 50.5 seconds left in the first. He scored from just outside the crease off a pass from behind the net by Scott Gomez. Pandolfo made it 2-0 with an empty-net goal with 42.5 seconds left.

Penguins 4, Stars 3 -- Erik Christensen scored the only goal in the shootout and Sidney Crosby had two assists in his first game since going scoreless in the All-Star Game as Pittsburgh beat host Dallas. Mark Recchi scored two goals for the Penguins, including the 500th of his career.

Blue Jackets 3, Sabres 2 -- Dan Fritsche jammed in a rebound on the second try midway through the third period for the decisive goal to lift host Columbus.

The Blue Jackets, who entered the third period trailing, 2-1, improved to just 3-22 when down through two periods.

Blues 2, Red Wings 1 -- Bill Guerin scored 1:09 into overtime to lift host St. Louis. Guerin, coming off an appearance at the All-Star Game earlier in the week, scored his team-leading 21st goal as he gathered a rebound off a shot from Doug Weight.

Predators 3, Blackhawks 1 -- Vernon Fiddler scored the winner with 2:21 left in the third period to spark visiting Nashville.

Wild 2, Flames 1 -- Pavol Demitra and Petteri Nummelin scored in the shootout for host Minnesota. Niklas Backstrom stopped Alex Tanguay and Byron Ritchie in the shootout, giving the Wild their league-best eighth shootout win.

Kings 3, Canucks 2 -- Alexander Frolov scored his second goal of the game 1:48 into overtime, and Sean Burke stopped 37 shots to lift visiting Los Angeles.

Thrashers 5, Islanders 4 -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored his second goal of the game with 2:01 left in overtime, giving host Atlanta the victory after squandering an early three-goal lead.

Hurricanes 6, Capitals 2 -- Justin Williams had two goals and an assist to lead host Carolina. The Hurricanes scored three goals in the second period and outshot the Capitals, 41-26.

Sharks 5, Oilers 1 -- Patrick Marleau had two goals and an assist for visiting San Jose. Sharks goalie Vesa Toskala got his 21st win of the season against six losses.

Coyotes 5, Avalanche 4 -- Ladislav Nagy scored the only goal in the shootout, lifting visiting Phoenix. Curtis Joseph finished with 23 saves and then stopped Wojtek Wolski, Milan Hejduk, and Joe Sakic in the shootout.
