Ilya Bryzgalov posted his third career shutout just hours after joining his new Phoenix teammates, Shane Doan had a power-play goal, and the Coyotes beat the host Los Angeles Kings, 1-0, yesterday to snap a three-game losing streak.

The Coyotes claimed Bryzgalov, who made 28 saves yesterday, off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks. The 27-year-old Russian played his first 69 regular-season NHL games with Anaheim, winning a Stanley Cup ring last season as Jean-Sebastien Giguere's backup.

"We are excited to bring in a world-class goaltender with a Stanley Cup on his résumé," Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said. "At 27 years old, he is just entering his prime."

Bryzgalov's leg pads, catching glove, and blocker pad still sported Anaheim's team colors. But he wore a nondescript white mask instead of the one that had Duck designs and "Bryz" painted on it.

Maple Leafs 3, Senators 0 - Vesa Toskala made 24 saves, Mats Sundin scored a goal, and host Toronto halted a five-game winless streak by beating Ottawa.

Darcy Tucker and Jiri Tlusty also scored for Toronto, which inched back to .500. Sundin's goal was his 533d, tying him with Hockey Hall of Famer Frank Mahovlich for 27th place on the all-time list.

It was Toskala's first shutout since last Oct. 25, against Columbus, when he played for San Jose.

Devils 6, Flyers 2 - Martin Brodeur gave Patrick Roy some company in the 500 victory club.

Brodeur made 26 saves in New Jersey's victory in Philadelphia and joined Roy as the only goalies in NHL history with that many victories.

Brodeur, who failed in his first three attempts at the coveted mark, improved to 500-273-105-15.

Blues 3, Predators 2 - Brad Boyes scored the only goal in the shootout, and visiting St. Louis won its third straight by beating Nashville.

Hannu Toivonen stopped 35 shots as Nashville outshot the Blues, 37-20, then he smothered shots from J.P. Dumont, Martin Erat, and Alexander Radulov in the shootout to win it.

Hurricanes 2, Panthers 1 - Rod Brind'Amour scored two goals, including one allowed after a video review, and Carolina rebounded from its first home shutout of the season to beat Florida in Raleigh, N.C.

Cam Ward stopped 27 shots a night after the Atlanta Thrashers beat him for two goals on 24 shots during a 3-0 victory. His solid play helped the Hurricanes maintain their hold on first place in the Southeast Division.

Blackhawks 5, Red Wings - Patrick Sharp scored three times and Rene Bourque added two shorthanded goals and an assist to lift visiting Chicago over Detroit.

It was Chicago's fourth straight victory over the Red Wings this season. The Blackhawks tied a team record with three shorthanded goals, and Detroit tied its record by allowing three.

Rangers 4, Penguins 3 - Jason Strudwick scored on a two-on-one break with fellow Rangers defenseman Paul Mara in overtime and New York rallied from two goals down, then withstood a late goal to beat host Pittsburgh.

Strudwick, who didn't have a point in 13 games, got behind defenseman Sergei Gonchar and took Mara's perfectly placed cross-crease pass and slid it inside the near post before goalie Marc-Andre Fleury could react with 1 minute 40 seconds gone in overtime.
