Cam Ward made 57 saves and Chad LaRose scored twice to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders, 4-3, last night at Uniondale, N.Y.

Rod Brind'Amour and Eric Staal also scored for the Hurricanes in their third straight victory at Nassau Coliseum.

The Islanders have lost three straight and three of four home games.

Rick DiPietro stopped 10 shots before being pulled for Joey MacDonald to start the second. MacDonald took the loss, stopping 14 shots.

The Islanders set a franchise record with 60 shots.

Blues 4, Panthers 0 - Former Maine star Ben Bishop made 12 saves in his first NHL start before leaving with an undisclosed lower-body injury as host St. Louis snapped a two-game losing streak.

Bishop, a St. Louis native, left with 15:27 to play. He was replaced by Marek Schwarz, recalled earlier in the day from Peoria of the AHL.

Red Wings 6, Blackhawks 5 - Pavel Datsyuk and Marian Hossa scored in a shootout for visiting Detroit, which has won four straight.

Patrick Kane scored on a five-on-three power play with 7:27 left in the third period to tie it, 5-5, for the Blackhawks, who played before a franchise-record, regular-season crowd of 22,690.

Ducks 6, Canadiens 4 - Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and two assists and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 47 shots as Anaheim won its third straight game.

Corey Perry and Chris Kunitz each had a goal and an assist for visiting Anaheim. Kent Huskins, Travis Moen, and Teemu Selanne also scored for the Ducks, who have won four of five since an 0-4 start.

Sabres 2, Avalanche 1 - Ryan Smyth, Milan Hejduk, and Wojtek Wolski scored shootout goals for host Colorado, which has won five straight. Buffalo (6-0) remains unbeaten in regulation.

Rangers 3, Penguins 2 - Nikolai Zherdev scored with 8.1 seconds left to force overtime and Fredrik Sjostrom netted the only goal of the shootout for host New York.

Sharks 3, Lightning 0 - Backup Brian Boucher made 22 saves for his second shutout for visiting San Jose, which has won seven of nine.

Maple Leafs 3, Senators 2 - Alexei Ponikarovsky scored a third-period goal for host Toronto, which has won two straight and has earned points in five of six games.

Capitals 6, Stars 5 - Alexander Semin scored at 2:17 of overtime as visiting Washington snapped a three-game losing streak. Mike Modano's 532d career goal off a setup by Brenden Morrow pulled Dallas into a 5-5 tie with 56.4 seconds left in regulation.

Wild 2, Blue Jackets 1 - Owen Nolan came off injured reserve to score his first goal for host Minnesota, the only Western Conference team without a loss in regulation.

Flames 4, Coyotes 1 - Miikka Kiprusoff made 23 saves as Calgary sent host Phoenix to its fourth loss in five games.

Canucks 6, Oilers 3 - Vancouver scored three power-play goals - two by Mason Raymond - in its victory over visiting Edmonton.

Flyers 3, Devils 2 - Jeff Carter scored in overtime and Martin Biron made 29 saves as host Philadelphia defeated New Jersey for the second time in two days.

Predators 5, Kings 4 - Ryan Jones. J.P. Dumont, Martin Erat, Jerred Smithson, and Jordin Tootoo scored to lead host Nashville.
