Wings surge past Lightning

Henrik Zetterberg, Mikael Samuelsson, and Johan Franzen scored third-period goals as the Detroit Red Wings beat the host Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-3, last night.

Pavel Datsyuk also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions, and Chris Osgood had 15 saves.

Mark Recchi, Jussi Jokinen, and Matt Pettinger scored for the Lightning, who were outshot, 39-18, and lost their third straight.

The Lightning paid for three penalties taken in an 18-second span during the final half-minute of the second period. Zetterberg and Samuelsson scored on the advantages to give Detroit a 3-2 lead early in the third.

Zetterberg tied it during a two-man advantage with an in-close goal at 1:38. Detroit went ahead on Samuelsson's shot from the top of the right circle at 2:30.

Islanders 3, Senators 1 - Kyle Okposo and Trent Hunter scored power-play goals, and Joey MacDonald made 29 saves to lead New York at Ottawa.

Bill Guerin also scored for New York, which had lost three straight (0-2-1).

Islanders rookie Josh Bailey, who made his NHL debut Tuesday, recorded his first point when he set up Okposo's second goal of the season 12:42 in, a power-play tally that tied it at 1.

Hunter gave New York a 2-1 lead with an unassisted effort on another man advantage 17:30 into the second.

Penguins 5, Flyers 4 - Penguins rookie Alex Goligoski scored on his first shootout attempt after Sidney Crosby tied it late in the third period with his second goal, and host Pittsburgh rallied to beat Philadelphia after blowing a three-goal lead.

Simon Gagne scored twice shorthanded during a four-goal second period that put the Flyers up, 4-3.

Goligoski, the sixth Pittsburgh shooter, shifted the puck from backhand to forehand before sliding it along the goal line and past goalie Martin Biron, who made 27 saves.

Wild 4, Coyotes 0 - Niklas Backstrom stopped 24 shots for his second shutout of the season and Minnesota scored three power-play goals to beat Phoenix in St. Paul.

Marek Zidlicky scored twice and had an assist for Minnesota, which defeated the Coyotes for the ninth straight time. Eric Belanger and Andrew Brunette also scored, and Marc-Andre Bergeron had two assists.

Backstrom, who beat Tampa Bay, 1-0, Oct. 18, is 8-0 against the Coyotes with a 1.13 goals-against average and three shutouts.

Sharks 6, Flames 1 - Milan Michalek and Joe Pavelski scored two goals apiece, and host San Jose's defense corps set a franchise record with nine assists.

Pavelski, captain Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton scored power-play goals in the four-goal first period for the Sharks.

Kings 3, Stars 2 - Michal Handzus and Kyle Quincey scored power-play goals and Erik Ersberg made 24 saves to help visiting Los Angeles extend its winning streak to four games.

Jarret Stoll added his sixth goal of the season for the Kings.

Maple Leafs 5, Oilers 2 - Tomas Kaberle had a goal and two assists, Matt Stajan added three assists, and visiting Toronto won for just the second time in six games.
