Playoff run doused, Flames fire Keenan

Mike Keenan was fired as coach of the Calgary Flames yesterday, almost a month after his team lost in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the second straight year. Keenan spent just two seasons with Calgary, and general manager Darryl Sutter said expectations were not met. Keenan, who had one year remaining on his contract, has coached eight of the 30 teams in the league. He has also led Philadelphia, Chicago, the New York Rangers, St. Louis, Vancouver, Boston, and Florida. He won the Stanley Cup in 1994 with the Rangers.

Rays place Kazmir on DL; Percival done?
Scott Kazmir is out for at least a couple of weeks, and Troy Percival's career may be over. Both pitchers were placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Tampa Bay Rays before the start of their series against the Florida Marlins. Kazmir, who has a left quadriceps strain, remained with the team. Percival, 39, sidelined by right shoulder tendinitis, flew home to California to discuss his baseball future with his family . . . The son of a New York City assistant principal who died of swine flu pitched a no-hitter while wearing a cap bearing his father's initials. Jordan Wiener is the 18-year-old son of Mitchell Wiener, who was buried Wednesday after dying of the virus on Sunday. Jordan attends Robert F. Kennedy High School in Queens and struck out 14 batters Thursday . . . Former major league pitcher Jerry Koosman has pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion and could face up to one year in prison. Koosman won two games for the New York Mets in the 1969 World Series.

Family pit bull injures Harrison's son
A pit bull owned by Steelers linebacker James Harrison bit his 2-year-old son in the thigh, but the boy is expected to recover though he remained hospitalized, the player's agent said . . . Michael Vick met with probation officials for the second time in the two days he's been home from prison, and prepared to begin a $10-an-hour construction job after the holiday weekend.

Qualifier moves into WTA Warsaw final
Romanian qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru upset sixth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova to advance to the final of the Warsaw Open, where she'll face eighth-seeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine. . . . Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain reached his first ATP Tour final by defeating seventh-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the Austrian Open in Kitzbuehel. He'll play Julien Benneteau today . . . A new Court 3 will be built at Wimbledon in time for the 2011 championships. The 2,000-seat court will occupy the site of the old Court 2.

After losing tens of millions of dollars, the first black majority owner of a major professional sports team is exploring selling the Charlotte Bobcats.
