Daniel Alfredsson’s second-period goal on a penalty shot gave the Ottawa Senators a 2-1 win over the Maple Leafs in Toronto.

The Senators captain used a nifty backhand deke move against Swedish countryman Jonas Gustavsson to help give his team its first victory this season.

Flyers 6, Capitals 5 - Danny Briere pounced on a loose puck and knocked in the rebound at 3:52 of overtime to keep host Philadelphia perfect.

Mike Richards topped Alex Ovechkin with his second career hat trick to help the Flyers open 3-0 for the first time since 1998. Ovechkin scored twice and has five goals on the season.

Wild 4, Ducks 3 - Andrew Brunette’s power-play goal in overtime lifted host Minnesota over Anaheim.

Trailing, 3-0, with less than 14 minutes to play in the third, the Wild got goals from Mikko Koivu, Petr Sykora and Eric Belanger.

Hurricanes 2, Lightning 1 - Tuomo Ruutu scored the winning goal for Carolina in a shootout, good for a home victory over Tampa Bay.

Flames 5, Canadiens 3 - Staffan Kronwall’s first NHL goal, a slap shot at 2:16 of the third period, lifted host Calgary over Montreal.

Oilers 5, Stars 4 - Goalie Nikolai Khabibulin picked up his 300th victory as Ales Hemsky scored the shootout winner propelling host Edmonton.

Kings 6, Sharks 4 - Teddy Purcell scored the tiebreaking goal from behind San Jose’s goal line with 5:10 to play after host Los Angeles had blown a four-goal lead.
