Mark Streit scored 53 seconds into overtime to give the New York Islanders a 4-3 victory over the host Washington Capitals last night.
It was the second straight win for New York - and third of the season. The Islanders also ended the Capitals’ winning streak at six.
Streit beat goalie Jose Theodore from about 10 feet for his second goal of the season. Seven of New York’s 12 games this season have gone to overtime.
Washington lost despite dominating the action. The Capitals outshot the Islanders, 40-30, and failed to convert numerous third-period scoring chances.
The Capitals opened the scoring on Alex Ovechkin’s NHL-high 14th goal of the season.
Penguins 4, Blue Jackets 3 - Pittsburgh scored twice in the final three minutes of regulation to tie it and Sidney Crosby had the only goal in the shootout to lead visiting Pittsburgh over Columbus.
Ruslan Fedotenko and Alex Goligoski scored late goals in a 39-second span to tie the game. Chris Kunitz also had a goal.
Panthers 6, Stars 5 - Steven Reinprecht had a natural hat trick in a 5:11 span of the first period, and Rostislav Olesz scored in the second round of a shootout to give Florida a victory in Dallas.
Five players scored for the Stars in coach Marc Crawford’s 1,000th NHL game. He’s the 15th coach in league history to reach the milestone.
Ducks 7, Canucks 2 - Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan each had two goals and an assist, Mike Brown put host Anaheim ahead to stay with his first career shorthanded goal, and the Ducks beat Vancouver to snap a four-game losing streak.
Wild 3, Rangers 2 - Petr Sykora had a goal and an assist, and Eric Belanger and Antti Miettinen also scored to help host Minnesota win for the first time in regulation this season.
Sharks 3, Avalanche 1 - Evgeni Nabokov made 24 saves, and Ryane Clowe and Jamie McGinn scored their first goals of the season to lead San Jose.
Sabres 3, Maple Leafs 2 - Tim Connolly scored a power-play goal 1:04 into overtime to help Buffalo beat visiting Toronto.
Blackhawks 3, Canadiens 2 - Patrick Sharp scored with 4:10 left to give host Chicago a victory over Montreal.![]()
