Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn waited five years for his first two-goal game in the NHL. Then he took care of the feat in 1 1/2 minutes.

Coburn scored twice and Scott Hartnell and Matt Carle each had a goal and two assists to help the Flyers snap a two-game losing streak and send the Carolina Hurricanes to their eighth straight loss, 6-1, yesterday in Philadelphia.

David Laliberte, playing in his first NHL game, and James Van Riemsdyk each had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, unbeaten in their last six regulation games at home against Carolina.

Coburn’s goals came within a span of 1:30 midway through the third period, the first with the teams skating four-on-four, the next on a slap shot.

Brandon Sutter scored for the Hurricanes (2-7-3), who are off to their worst start since 1997 - the franchise’s first season in Carolina - when they were 2-7-2. Carolina is winless on the road (0-5-2). The Hurricanes are on an 0-5-3 skid overall.

Wild 2, Penguins 1 - Niklas Backstrom made 34 saves and Minnesota won on the road for the first time this season.

Kyle Brodziak and Eric Belanger scored for the Wild, who avoided being the first team in 17 years to start 0-9 on the road.

The Wild won consecutive games for the first time this season.

Minnesota beat the Stanley Cup champion Penguins (11-3), who own the NHL’s best record, despite being outshot, 35-15. The Wild (5-9) are 3-0 against Eastern Conference opponents.

Islanders 5, Sabres 0 - Martin Biron earned his 200th win and 26th career shutout, and Jeff Tambellini scored three goals for his first career hat trick as host New York routed Buffalo to stretch its winning streak to three games.

Biron made 38 saves in his first victory with the Islanders since joining the club during the offseason.

Devils 2, Lightning 1 - David Clarkson scored the lone shootout goal in the fourth round of the tiebreaker and New Jersey extended its season-opening road winning streak to seven games with a victory over Tampa Bay.

Martin Brodeur stopped 18 shots, but had his bid to tie Terry Sawchuk’s NHL shutout record of 103 end just under 5 minutes into the third period.

Canadiens 5, Maple Leafs 4 - Mike Cammalleri and Scott Gomez scored in a shootout to lift host Montreal over Toronto after it squandered a two-goal lead in the third period.

Panthers 4, Blues 0 - In St. Louis, Tomas Vokoun stopped all 34 shots for his 32d shutout and Nathan Horton had a goal and an assist to lift Florida.

Predators 4, Stars 2 - Patric Hornqvist and Kevin Klein scored goals 43 seconds apart midway through the third period to lead host Nashville.

Thrashers 3, Senators 1 - In Ottawa, Ondrej Pavelec made 50 saves, and Rich Peverley had a goal and assist for Atlanta, which broke a four-game losing streak with a victory over the Senators.

Coyotes 3, Ducks 2 - Radim Vrbata scored in the shootout to give host Phoenix the win.

Red Wings 3, Flames 1 - Brad Stuart and Tomas Holmstrom scored goals 59 seconds apart in the second period to help Detroit beat host Calgary.
