After being shut out by the New York Islanders four days ago, Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres returned the favor.

Miller made 24 saves for his second shutout of the season and 14th overall, and Thomas Vanek had a goal and assist in the Sabres’ 3-0 victory last night in Buffalo.

Derek Roy and Paul Gaustad also scored to help the Sabres (9-2-1) rebound from a 5-0 loss to the Islanders Saturday on Long Island.

“We played a real sound game coming off that loss,’’ Miller said. “We did a very sound job pushing the puck up the ice, and we didn’t give up anything that was too dangerous. We want to be a team that’s in control.’’

They were certainly that against an Islanders team that had won four straight by a combined score of 15-5. But New York was unable to generate much offense against the NHL’s stingiest defense and its shut-down goalie.

Buffalo has given up just 24 goals in 12 games this season, and played perhaps one of its best overall games against the Islanders.

“It was a real great effort,’’ said Vanek, who scored for the first time in five games.

Devils 3, Capitals 2 - Niclas Bergfors scored two power-play goals 3:13 apart in the third period to break open a tie game and send host New Jersey to victory. The Devils ended Washington’s streak of nine straight games with a point (6-0-3).

Sharks 3, Blue Jackets 2 - Defenseman Dan Boyle scored the lone goal in a shootout, and Evgeni Nabokov stopped all three Columbus shooters to give visiting San Jose its sixth straight win.

Panthers 3, Hurricanes 0 - Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves for his second straight shutout, Steven Reinprecht opened the scoring early in the third period, and host Florida extended Carolina’s winless streak to 10 games.

Flames 3, Stars 2 - Jarome Iginla scored on a power play at 1:25 of overtime to give visiting Calgary the comeback win. Daymond Langkow tied it for the Flames with 49 seconds left in regulation with goalie Curtis McElhinney on the bench for an extra attacker. Dallas drew a delay-of-game penalty at 1:06 of overtime, and the Flames needed only 19 seconds to capitalize.

Avalanche 4, Coyotes 1 - Milan Hejduk had two goals and an assist and Peter Budaj - recovered from swine flu - stopped 28 shots in his first start of the season to lead host Colorado. The Avalanche improved to 5-0 at the Pepsi Center, one win away from tying their best home start since moving to the Mile High City.
