When Miikka Kiprusoff and Jarome Iginla both produce, the Calgary Flames can get away with scoring only once.
Kiprusoff earned his first shutout of the season and Iginla extended his goal-scoring streak to four games, leading Calgary to a 1-0 victory over the Canadiens last night in Montreal.
Kiprusoff made 25 saves and improved to 10-3-1 this season as Calgary won its fourth straight to begin a three-game trip. It was his 31st NHL shutout, and his first since Feb. 12, when he turned aside 36 shots in a 2-0 win over Los Angeles.
“It’s always nice. It says a lot about how your team plays in front of you, too,’’ Kiprusoff said.
Named the NHL’s first star of the week Monday, Iginla scored his team-leading ninth goal at 14:55.
Iginla, who has scored five times during the streak, took a return pass from Olli Jokinen and put a shot through traffic past Jaroslav Halak from the top of the right circle for the game’s lone goal.
“It’s a good spot to shoot from, lots of things can happen,’’ Iginla said. “It was a quick give-and-go and we just got them turning a little bit.’’
Halak stopped 30 shots for Montreal, which has lost its past three games at home.
“It’s tough but sometimes it happens in hockey,’’ Halak said. “You just have to find a way to score a goal.’’
Flames forward Curtis Glencross sat out the first game of his three-game suspension. Glencross was suspended by the NHL Monday for his hit to the head of Chris Drury of the New York Rangers in Calgary’s 3-1 win Saturday.
Wild 5, Maple Leafs 2 - Minnesota’s Mikko Koivu scored one goal and assisted on two others in the second period as visiting Minnesota ended Toronto’s two-game winning streak.
Marek Zidlicky broke a 1-1 tie at 5:44 of the period. Then, 26 seconds after Koivu beat Jonas Gustavsson at 17:29, Greg Zanon made it 4-1.
Niklas Backstrom made that stand up with 37 saves for the Wild, who also got goals from Martin Havlat and Owen Nolan into an empty net to win for the fourth time in five games.
Alexei Ponikarovsky and Phil Kessel scored for the Maple Leafs, who had earned points in seven straight games (3-0-4).
Blues 6, Canucks 1 - David Perron scored three goals, two in a span of 1:54 during a four-goal first period, and Brad Boyes added a goal and three assists to lead host St. Louis. The Blues, 1-5-1 in their first seven home games, scored four times in the first 7:36.
Sharks 4, Predators 3 - Dan Boyle scored with a minute left in the third period to lift host San Jose. Joe Pavelski, Jamie McGinn, and Devin Setoguchi also scored for the Sharks, 6-0-1 at home.
Senators 4, Oilers 3 - Jason Spezza scored the winning goal in the shootout for host Ottawa, which twice came from behind.![]()
