With the Oilers on the outside looking in at the playoffs, Whitney is an attractive option who would fit well in Boston. The 30-year-old defenseman played at Boston University before an NHL career that includes stops in Pittsburgh, Anaheim and Edmonton.
Whitney has played nearly 500 NHL games and has more than 250 career points. He has been injury prone, but is also a solid player on power-play units, an area the Bruins could use some help in. Whitney will be a free agent after the season.
