April 25, 2012: Capitals 2, Bruins 1 (OT): Last year's first-round ended in disappointment for the Bruins when Game 7 against Washington ended with a overtime series-ending goal netted by Capitals ring wing Joel Ward. The Capitals took advantage of a bad line change, forced a shot and Ward scored on a rebound 2 minutes, 57 seconds into overtime to lift the Capitals to a 2-1 win.
The loss ended the Bruins’ defense of their 2011 Stanley Cup title. Boston forced a Game 7 with a 4-3 victory in overtime in Game 6.
For Washington, the win was marred by a barrage of postgame racial epithets directed at Ward, who is black, on Twitter.
