After he spent the first 58 minutes 36 seconds of Game 2 sacrificing his body, taking pucks off his shins, and dishing out heavy hits along the boards, it seemed fitting that Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk punctuated Monday night’s 6-1 smackdown of the Penguins with his third-period goal. It was Boychuk’s fifth tally of the postseason.

“He’s got a great shot,’’ said Bruins forward Chris Kelly of Boychuk before Wednesday night’s Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals at TD Garden. “Johnny plays well at both ends of the ice. It’s nice to see him contribute like he has been.

Boychuk’s goal underscored the contributions the Bruins have received from their offensive-minded defensemen during these playoffs — while not skimping in their own end.
