With 0.8 seconds remaining in regulation, David Krejci deflected home an Adam McQuaid floater from the point to give the Bruins a 2-1 win over San Jose at TD Garden. It was the first regulation loss for the Sharks.
The Sharks, trailing, 1-0, after 40 minutes, tied the game 18 seconds into the third. Goalie Tuukka Rask stopped Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s point shot. But Patrick Marleau was in place to tuck home the rebound to tie the score.
Jarome Iginla, who was held without a goal in his first eight games, hit the back of the net in the second period. The play started with Dennis Seidenberg swooping in to keep a puck from squirting out of the offensive zone.
Seidenberg swept the puck toward the net. The puck glanced off traffic, deflected off the end boards, and bounced to the right side of the net. Iginla crashed the net and found the loose puck. As goalie Antti Niemi pushed from right to left, Iginla banked the puck off the goalie’s right pad. The puck angled through Niemi’s five-hole and into the net at 18:48 of the second, giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins, who were blitzed in the first period, skated better in the second. After taking a long-distance bank pass from Torey Krug, Shawn Thornton hammered a slapper off the left post. Later in the second, Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron broke away for an odd-man rush. Niemi gloved Bergeron’s bid at 17:09.
The Bruins were under assault in the first period. The Sharks pounded Rask with 15 pucks. Rask turned them all back.
Rask was electric during an early roughing penalty on Iginla. On the power play, Rask kicked out Grade-A chances by Logan Couture and Marleau.
Later in the first, Tomas Hertl had a net-front chance after a bad bounce off the end boards. Rask read the play, burst out of the crease, cut down the angle, and booted out Hertl’s attempt with his left pad.
The Sharks held a 16-3 shot advantage after 20 minutes, with San Jose attempting 28 shots and Boston just nine. Had it not been for Rask, the Sharks could have grabbed a 4-0 lead.Fluto Shinzawa can be reached at email@example.com. Follow him on Twitter @GlobeFluto.
