Hernia surgery for Ference

LAS VEGAS - Banged up and sidelined by the end of Boston’s second-round playoff series with Carolina, Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference had surgery at Mass. General Hospital yesterday to repair a hernia and alleviate a problematic groin injury.
Ference, 30, will remain in Boston for a few days before returning to his offseason home in British Columbia. According to a team spokesman, the versatile blue liner will need 4-6 weeks of rest before returning to workouts, but he is expected to be in the opening-night lineup in October.
Along with patching up the hernia, doctors performed an adductor release, a procedure in which the adductor tendon typically is cut away from where it attaches to the pubic bone.
In most cases, releasing the tendon in this manner and allowing it to heal to surrounding tissue, greatly diminishes related groin pain.
