Bruins' Hunwick files for arbitration

Bruins defenseman Matt Hunwick was one of 20 NHL players to file for arbitration by yesterday’s 5 p.m. deadline. Hearings will take place between July 20 and Aug. 4, although Hunwick is expected to sign an extension before then. “Still negotiating with B’s,’’ agent Peter Fish wrote in an e-mail. “It will work out.’’ Other notable filers were: Nikolai Zherdev (Rangers), Jiri Hudler (Red Wings), Tomas Plekanec (Canadiens), and Travis Zajac (Devils).

Indians GM: Wedge is safe for 2009
Eric Wedge’s job is safe for the rest of the season. Cleveland general manager Mark Shapiro said the manager and his staff will keep their jobs despite the Indians’ poor performance. “I thought it was important for the second half to remove a potential distraction that exists from that speculation,’’ said Shapiro . . . All-Star outfielder Josh Hamilton, out since June 2 after abdominal surgery, is expected to be in the Texas Rangers’ lineup tonight.

Phillips, Gruda lift Sun over Shock
Erin Phillips scored 6 of her 19 points in overtime, leading the Connecticut Sun to a 95-92 victory over the Detroit Shock in Auburn Hills, Mich. Sandrine Gruda had a career-high 23 points for the Sun . . . Cappie Pondexter scored 21 points and Diana Taurasi had 20, pacing the Phoenix Mercury to a 104-89 victory over the Sparks in Los Angeles. The Sparks’ Candace Parker, who gave birth to a daughter May 13, scored 6 points in her season debut. . . . Tammy Sutton-Brown had 22 points and nine rebounds, leading the host Indiana Fever past the Atlanta Dream, 78-74, for their franchise-best eighth straight victory.

At long last, Coyne team posts 1st win
Justin Wilson won the IndyCar Series race at Watkins Glen International, giving Dale Coyne Racing its first victory since the team was formed in 1984 by dominating the Camping World Grand Prix. Wilson started on the front row alongside polesitter Ryan Briscoe of Team Penske, beating him by nearly five seconds. “It took too long,’’ a smiling Coyne said from pit row. Scott Dixon was third, followed by Helio Castroneves. Dario Franchitti, the points leader, was involved in an early crash and finished 15th.

Guadeloupe and Mexico strike Gold
Luis Miguel Noriega scored his first international goal on a penalty kick in the 45th minute as Mexico defeated Nicaragua, 2-0, in the nightcap of a Gold Cup doubleheader at Oakland, Calif. In the earlier game, Loic Loval had a goal and an assist and David Fleurival also scored to lead Guadeloupe past Panama, 2-1 . . . Alecko Eskandarian scored the only goal as the Los Angeles Galaxy posted a 1-0 victory over the Revolution (4-5-4) Saturday night in Carson, Calif. The Revolution were playing their fifth game in 14 days after reaching the SuperLiga semifinals and losing in the US Open Cup.

Buzz killers: Lobsters sweep New York
Raquel Kops-Jones was a part of three winning matches to power the Boston Lobsters (2-0) to a 24-14 victory over the host New York Buzz in World TeamTennis action. Kops-Jones beat Lauren Embree in singles; she teamed with Bryanne Stewart Crabb for a doubles win over Embree and Allie Will; and partnered with James Auckland for a mixed doubles win over Will and Matthew Kandath. In men’s singles, Boston’s Jan-Michael Gambill topped Alex Domijan and in men’s doubles Gambill and Auckland beat Domijan and Kandath.

Gozzip Girl rates high in Hollywood
Gozzip Girl, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, roared from the back of the pack to win the American Oaks by 3/4 lengths over Well Monied at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif. Gozzip Girl closed from 11th to top the field of 14 3-year-old fillies . . . Jim Hardy earned his 2,000th career driving win by guiding Slim Down to a victory in the sixth race at Rockingham Park.

Miscellany
Brown varsity eight earns Henley title
Brown’s men’s varsity eight won the Ladies’ Plate Cup by beating Britain’s under-23 squad by a half-length at the Royal Henley Regatta on the River Thames in Henley, England. It was one of only two American victories on a day when 19 titles were at stake. The Princeton lightweights beat the Brown freshmen in the Temple Cup for the other American win.
