Former Boston College star Patrick Eaves, traded by Carolina to the Bruins July 24 with a 2010 fourth-round pick for Aaron Ward, signed a one-year contract with Detroit yesterday.

After acquiring Eaves from the Hurricanes, the Bruins bought out the final two years of the 25-year-old’s contract, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The Bruins must carry Eaves’s buyout numbers on the books for the next four years ($258,333 in 2009-10, 2011-12, and 2012-13; credit of $41,667 in 2010-11). Eaves has 45 goals and 45 assists in 242 NHL games.

The Reading Royals will serve as the Bruins’ ECHL affiliate in 2009-10. Reading also has an affiliation with Toronto. The Bruins did not have an ECHL affiliate last season.
