No scoring in the second period. Marco Sturm had the best bid, putting a backhander on goal after a pass from Brad Boyes. But Brent Johnson dove to his left and gloved Sturm's shot at 10:49, keeping the game tied at 1-1.

* Brad Stuart belted Jakub Klepis at the Boston blue line with a clean shoulder check, dazing the Washington forward. Stuart was chased down by Matt Pettinger, who earned a roughing call while trying to defend his teammate.

* Earlier in the period, Pettinger had a scoring bid foiled when his wrister rang off the left post. Pettinger had beaten Zdeno Chara on the play.

* Stuart's broken right pinkie is still giving him problems. During one shift, he crashed into the corner and was in pain after he got to his skates. After the shift, Stuart returned to the bench and removed his glove to inspect his busted finger.

* Alexander Ovechkin leads all skaters with five shots. He steamed a one-timer into Tim Thomas's gut at 15:36, causing the goalie to do a roll on the ice after the stop.
