Battered B's

WILMINGTON — Veteran Bruins center Marc Savard, cracked across the back Saturday night by a Steve Begin crosscheck in Montreal, underwent a CT scan today at Mass. General Hospital and will not be in the lineup tomorrow night when the Bruins face the Maple Leafs in Toronto.

Head coach Claude Julien confirmed the CT scan after today’s workout here at Ristuccia Center, but he was unsure of the results. Julien did not reveal why Savard needed the exam, but CT skans typically are given when there is a suspicion of a broken bone.

Savard was cracked across the lower back by a Begin two-hander in the final moments of regulation play. After the game, he was wincing and had a hard time breathing—sometimes a symptom of cracked ribs or back spasms.

Ference also out

Julien also said that Andrew Ference, who saw limited action in the third period at Montreal, also would not be in the lineup against the Leafs.

‘’It’s a leg injury,’’ said Julien. ‘’He’ll be day-to-day.’’ Julien was confident that Ference’s injury will not be long-term.

Bergeron update

Patrice Bergeron, not cleared for contact, remained encouraged after participating in the full workout (without contact). He has not had a headache in over a week. Meanwhile, his weight remains at 185 pounds, some 10 pounds under his desired playing weight.

‘’My appetite is there,’’ said an upbeat Bergeron, who will workout with the squad in Toronto. ‘’But there is only so much I can eat, and then I burn off a lot with cardio workouts.’’
Bergeron is augmenting his diet with high-calorie shakes.

Alberts taking it slow

Andrew Alberts still is not taking bodychecks during workouts, but he dealt out a few during the one-hour workout. He said a recent visit to a chiropractor helped turn around his lingering neck woes.

‘’The muscles on the right side of my neck weren’t firing correctly,’’ he said. ‘’But they’re doing better now.’’
