Metropolit's future

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff April 29, 2008 11:50 AM

Will Glen Metropolit get to call Boston home for a second season? Or will the 33-year-old (he'll be 34 at the start of camp) find NHL employment elsewhere?

His positives: Veteran presence, can be a skilled player and also kill penalties, good guy in the dressing room, inexpensive, played in all 89 games this season.

His negatives: Is a center in an organization full of pivot men, went two months without a goal.

Metropolit has heard around the league that given his 2007-08 performance, other teams would be interested in his services if he doesn't re-sign with Boston. If the Bruins can sign him to a one- or two-year deal at short money (how's $800,000 per season sound?), Metropolit would be a valuable depth player to have around. However, he'll be facing competition in Marc Savard, David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron, Vladimir Sobotka, and perhaps a center from Providence (Nate Thompson would be a candidate) in camp.

Prediction: Metropolit re-signs.
