Jonathan Sigalet traded to Columbus

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff May 27, 2008 06:03 PM

The Bruins made a minor trade today, acquiring the rights to 20-year-old forward Matt Marquardt from Columbus for defenseman Jonathan Sigalet.

Marquardt, taken by the Blue Jackets with the 194th pick of the 2006 draft, most recently played for Baie-Comeau of the QMJHL, scoring 23 goals and 13 assists in 33 games in 2007-08. The 6-foot-3, 222-pound wing is a former junior teammate of Bruins prospects Martins Karsums and Brad Marchand. The threesome played for Moncton of the QMJHL in 2005-06.

Sigalet, Boston's fourth-round pick in 2005, left Bowling Green after his sophomore year in 2004-05 to sign with the Bruins. Sigalet appeared in one NHL game on Jan. 9, 2007. The 22-year-old defenseman had hit a plateau in his development and had been passed on the depth chart by Matt Lashoff and Matt Hunwick. Sigalet will become a restricted free agent at the end of 2008-09.

The Bruins must sign Marquardt before June 1, or else the forward will become a free agent.

  1. "6-foot-3, 222-pound wing"

    Now we're talking.

  1. Just FYI to Fluto...Sigalet is a goalie, not a defensemen. Are we talking about the right guy here?

  1. Oops...My bad! I saw sigalet and my eyes read Jordan, not Jonathan. A thousand apologies! :)

  1. Well, it was nice to have both Sigalets here. Enjoyed having them both here, it must be great playing with your brother. I understand the trade, Johnathan did not have the best of years. But like any minor league team, new year = new faces. It would have been nice to be starting the finals against Chcago this week but oh well, there's always next year. I have a feeling we will not see Jordan, the goalie, back with us. Didn't we sign Regan to an entry level contract? SO, with Tuukka and Regan, where would Sigalet the goalie play? Tuukka cost us the playoffs.....I am not sure he is the real deal. Jordan got the shaft here, with Hannu and now Tuukka.....Thanks P-Bruins for a great run this year, nonetheless.....Nate Thompson belongs in Boston, 4th line energy/checking line center, too.

  1. wow...humility in a blog...I commend you Tina...And no one threatened to skewer you and throw you into the Charles, which may be even more remarkable. I definitely have to go to sleep now...

  1. I like this trade. Bruins didn't need Sigalet. They have Lashoff and Hunwick. I think Lashoff could be a 1st line defenseman personally. Marquardt is just adding to the Bruins young team full of prospects. Go Bs.

  1. Yep they're brothers. Likely nothing more than a swap of career minor leaguers. Sigalet has been solid in the AHL but doesn't really project to make an impact in the big league and as Fluto stated he's been passed on the depth chart, not only by Lashoff and Hunwick, but McQuaid and Skinner as well. Wish him the best though.

Definitely like the sound of this Marquardt kid though - from Hockeysfuture.com:

"A mammoth of a player, Marquardt already has NHL size. He's a relentless and punishing hitter with the ability to change the momentum of the game with his checks. However he also possesses surprising soft hands and an accurate shot. As can be expected, his skating requires plenty of work, although with his work ethic that should not be a problem in a few years."

What's surprising is that he's scoring at a point per game pace and hasn't really racked up too many PIMs. Given his size I thought he'd be up there in time spent in the box but the numbers look like he's fairly disciplined. Probably a 4th line energy guy at best - but the thought of having another big winger that can tuck the puck in every once in a while is good news. Between Lucic, Knackstedt and this kid I think the B's are starting to set a pattern.

  1. Ed - I didn't get a chance to watch any of the games but from the sounds of it Tuuka was really solid aside from the last 2 games against Portland. Sounds like he needs to work on consistency and focus and not giving up that one softy a game but it was his first season in North America, give him another year before you give up on him. Guys like Shcneider and Pogge have also struggled at the AHL level early on but are still considered top goaltender prospects.

I agree that Jordan is probably gone too - I believe he's a UFA and with Regan/Rask there's no reason to keep him around. Its too bad he was definitely a feel good story. I'm sure he'll get scooped up by another team though - he's always been solid.

  1. Sounds like the Bruins got another big winger with some scoring ability, young too. Didn't cost them a lot, either, even though I liked Sigalet (both of em) as a guy. I wonder why the Jackets agreed to give up such a young talent. Chiarelli to his credit has been making some "small" trades over his two years here that have turned out to be kinda big (except for the Toivonen deal; since I just don't think that Carl Soderberg's vision problems in that one eye will be sufficient to be as great as he could have been).

  1. You guys need to understand something about the Sigalet brothers here. Jordan Sigalet is a great goalie, but he has MS, and it's going to force him to retire real soon, my guess is this year even, with that situation and the fact that Jonathon is being passed on the depth charts probably made him want to get traded.

  1. No one is pining the loss of the Sigalets from a depth perspective here. More that they were good guys. The fact that Jordan did battle MS is why he endeared himself to fans. Overall the organization will be better off with Marquardt and Regan than the Sigalets - its just sad to see two character guys leave.

  1. As much as I want to see a Lucic-Bergeron-Kobasew line this fall. It might be fun to see this kid playing on one wing, Lucic on the other and a center who can and will hit like Sobotka in the middle.

Do we have any 200 lb + centers in Providence?

  1. The reason by Columbus gave up on Marquardt is because they could not sign him to a pro contract. So the Bs gave up a good AHL D-man with 1yr left on his pro contract for a player in Juniors that refused to sign with the team that drafted him.

B's have until June 1 to get him signed or lose the rights to him. Is this bad? No way, as many have said the Bs already have depth at D in Providence and really needed scoring at the Pro level and this kid has tremendous upside. Let's hope he smartens up and signs an entry level contract so he can put his $$ where his mouth is. I say throw him on the wing with Krecji at center and Lucic riding opposite. Toivonon just signed with the Fin's btw.. so let's also hope Soderberg pans out for the Bs.

  1. This was a good trade for the future. This kid has no chance of making the B's roster out of camp though (guy from Newbury), so no need to speculate the idea of him playing with Lucic and Nokey or Sabotka. The team has to much 2nd, 3rd and 4th talent to honestly think this kid will play next year. If he was that close, Columbus wouldn't have quit on him. He has potential. Its a smart move, good for depth and future plans as he develops (he's only 20) but thats where it ends. I hope he turns into a nice player though. Seems more like a young Mike Knuble.

Posted by Sean Dempsey May 29, 08 11:43 AM
  1. Sean - 2 yrs ago, no-one would have ever thought that Lucic would be NHL ready. Last year he surprised everyone in camp and made the team, right out of Juniors. That being said, it is a long shot that Marquardt would make the team but if the Bs do end up signing him, my money is on him at least making last cut out of camp. Everything I read about him is positive and the Bs are absolutely moving towards size and toughness.

I may be wrong, but I agree about the trade being a no risk high reward trade. Kudos to Chiarelli.

  1. Yep really the only risk is not getting him signed - then you've given up an asset for nothing, but really from the big B's perspective Sigalet won't be missed as its highly unlikely he'll make it to the NHL. Columbus's farm team will gain a solid player though and some depth they might not have if they do need an emergency call up.

I like the Knuble comparison Sean - that's likely the "best case scenario" for this guy. In all likelihood he'll be a 3rd/4th line banger several years down the road (Hockeys Future gives him a 6.5C rating which translates to career 3rd liner potential). I wouldn't anticipate him getting a serious look this year for the NHL roster. More than likely bound for Providence and then if he performs particularly well he'll get a call up in case of injury.

  1. Rockstareh:

You are probably right not to give up too soon on Tuukka, but I think the team defense we play here makes tuukka look better than he might be, I am willing to be wrong but that's how I see it. I see 30-40 P-B's games a year. I saw game 4 in Portland, and that O/T goal was a killer, big time softee. And I won't even go there with game 6 here. tuukka was soft on shootouts at times too this year, Scranton-Wilkes Barre made him look bad in a shootout here this year. But hope he comes back strong, maybe the 1st year here does him good.

No 200 lbs centers here but they need to re-sign Big Mac MacIntyre.....enforcer with a capital "E", but the refs nail him on the bogus calls now., Sometimes better to leave him on the bench.

Karsums looks good, he seemed to step up his game as the year went on.

Lashoff should be in Boston, he made some "sick' offensive moves this year, seems good with the puck.....injury prone maybe?

Hope we don't lose Coach Gordon, maybe Claude needs an assistant in Boston. C'mon guys, promote a good coach!!

How many days until opening night? I miss hockey!!!

Posted by Ed from Pawtucket May 29, 08 06:24 PM
  1. Hey Ed! Thanks for the update - its nice to hear that stuff from a fans perspective whose actually watched the games. Good to hear Karsums and Lashoff are getting close.

I agree, I really hope Gordon is kept in the organization. He's done absolute wonders with Providence. I would hate to see a talented coach let go. They should be grooming him to head the Big B's at some point in time.

On the UFA front - it looks like the Yotes weren't able to sign Blake Wheeler so he's going to become a Free Agent. He's got great size (6'3" - 200+) and can put the puck in the net. He also played along side Phil for the Gophers. Wonder if PC could swing a reunion. Rumours have it that he'd like to play at home for the Wild but I'm hoping the B's can lure him in. He fits PC's description of needs(size/toughness/scoring) to a tee. Of course who knows how his skills will translate to the big leagues.
