Draft: Fertile trading grounds

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff June 17, 2008 12:44 PM

The days leading up to the draft have proven to be active on the trade market. Last year, there were two significant moves on the first day of the draft, both involving goalies.

Toronto acquired Vesa Toskala and Mark Bell from San Jose for first- and second-round picks in 2007 and a 2009 fourth-rounder. Florida acquired Tomas Vokoun from Nashville for first- and second-round picks in 2008 and a second-round pick in 2007.

The Bruins kicked the tires on Manny Fernandez in the days prior to last year's draft, setting up the July 1 deal for Petr Kalus and a fourth-round pick in 2009.

This season, because of the scarcity of impact players hitting unrestricted free agency on July 1, there could be more eye-raising trades in Ottawa. Florida, as usual, will be queried about the availability of captain Olli Jokinen, Pittsburgh could deal Ryan Malone and his negotiating rights, and Columbus might be looking for veteran help in exchange for prospects.

  1. How about Murray and the 16th pick for someone else's 1st or 2nd round pick.....That's how bad I want to get rid of Murray

  1. How about Murray and the 16th first round pick, and the third round pick for Malkin.

  1. How about Murray for a 6th or 7th round pick. Risk free for the other team and the B's get rid of him at no cost. Way cheaper than buying him out, and we even get a loooooong shot prospect to boot. Not to mention, ton's of cap space left over.

B's fan in Newbury, I wish you were running the penguins...

  1. I would not be surprised to see Axelsson traded due to his low cap #.

  1. The B's currently have the 16th overall pick in this years draft. This is one of the deepest drafts in years according to NHL insiders. Should the B's trade down in this draft for additional picks in the second and third rounds?

The 2003 draft class was also deemed a "very deep"draft class by NHL insiders. The B's also held the 16th overall pick that year. The B's traded the 16th overall pick for the 21st (first round), 66th (secord round) and 107th (fourth round). The following players were still available at number 16 when the B's traded the pick: Zack Parise, Ryan Getzlaf, and Steve Bernier... The B's selected Patrice Bergeron that year in the second round with the 45th overall pick.

There are several Russian players that top this draft class and will likely be passed over due to the lack of a transfer agreement. Trading down may be worth the risk. However; if the B's keep the 16th overall pick they may get a very good player at that position.

  1. PC: Let me translate for nuno. He would like you to trade Axelson and Murray.
Personally, I like Axey even though he doesn't produce offensively, he's one of the best checking line wingers and PK men in the game. But Murray, he can't even throw a hit and is way to slow to play the PK.
