Camp wrap, Day 1
WILMINGTON -- Patrice Bergeron, Manny Fernandez, and Providence assistant Rob Murray were the only Bruins to hit the Ristuccia Arena ice this morning upon the opening of the second annual development camp.
Bergeron and Fernandez skated for approximately one hour. They went through basic shooting drills with help from Murray. During one drill, Murray and Bergeron tangled in front of the net for loose pucks.
"I'm feeling good," said Bergeron, who weighs about 190 pounds and has been symptom-free all summer. Bergeron has been working out six days a week in Quebec City.
Fernandez also said he felt good, noting that it's the healthiest he's been in two years. Fernandez acknowledged he felt occasional discomfort in his left knee toward the end of the season, but said he is pain-free and has been skating three times a week in his native Montreal.
* F Jamie Arniel, arrested on June 22 for impaired driving in Kingston, Ontario, acknowledged committing one of the biggest mistakes of his life when he got behind the wheel the night he was drafted. "I definitely exercised awful judgment that night," Arniel said. "I definitely wasn't in the state of mind to be making decisions like that. I made the wrong one. I'm just happy no one got hurt. I feel really bad. I embarrassed my family and the organization. I'll definitely do whatever it takes to prove I'm a Bruin on the ice, and more importantly off the ice as well." Arniel said his lawyer has advised him not to comment on the proceedings of the case.
* F Jordan Knackstedt, who scored 31 goals and 54 assists for Moose Jaw in 2007-08, is eligible to return to his junior club in 2008-09. Knackstedt said he'd prefer to sign a contract and be in Providence next year, but noted he'll do whatever it takes for him to be successful. Director of hockey operations and player development Don Sweeney said the club has not made a decision on Knackstedt's 2008-09 destination.
* D Tommy Cross will miss his second straight development camp because of a knee injury. Cross recently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee. Cross is expected to be ready for the US Junior Evaluation Camp next month in Lake Placid, N.Y. Cross will be a freshman at Boston College this fall.

Jeez - is Cross ever actually going to play? Did they really need to trade-up to get this kid considering the extent of his injury? I would have guessed he'd slide more in the draft considering the questions surrounding his knee.
Who cares? The B's are basically a non entity around here.
Bill, I can't believe you take the time to write who cares on a bruins blog. You clearly do and are misguided.
All I know is I can't wait to sign up for an "All you can eat" mini pack. I'm sure security will be tight and anyone caught sliding hotdogs to their friends will be shot on sight.
Why didn't the Briuns sign Glen Metropolit? That guy's a Bruin.
Cap space was probably the reason for not signing Metropolit. He's a gamer and definitely played like a Bruin, but the roster needs more scoring. We got the grinding game down. Now we just need to pop a few more in and we're on our way. Bill S - if the Bruins are a non-entity, why are you posting on the Bruins Blog? Don't forget, the Pats and Celtics were the forgotten step-children for a while there when they were struggling. The B's showed this last spring that they are back and will challenge Montreal for first in the division. They deserve more respect than you're (not) giving them.
Yea. Not signing Metropolit will come back to haunt. If he wasn' t last year's 7th Man, he was definitely 8th. The Bruins, against hype, actually have become less gritty, less 'Bruin-y' up front.
I can't believe Arneil goes out gets arrested for OUI after there already many questions about his character. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt but now I don't know. Also, why is there virtually no talk about Joe Colburne? Does anyone remember he is the No. 1 pick? It's almost like our drafting has been so bad that the pick is already relegated to the dust bin of history; destined to go the way of Aitken, Stevenson, Ryabchikov, Samsonov and a myriad of others.
Jeezus what is it with knee injuries and this club?
And Metro wasn't signed because a) he doesn't score enough and b) the Bruins have loads of kids in Providence, juniors and recent free agent signings who deserve a shot with the team. Plus, another year of Metro (who I like) most likely means the B's are keeping someone in the minors/juniors longer than is needed and that's a waste of money and time. It runs the risk of the guys who the Bruins dump money into for three years walking at the end of an entry level contract.
Personally, I'd rather have kept Metro and jettisoned Schafer.
I think the B's see how well the other teams are doing in this town and slowly are trying to do the right thing. People have every right to be cautious, even skeptical. Chiarelli basically inherited an expansion team, just give it another year or two. If the team we saw towards the end of last year and the playoffs were the real B's, then next year should be very entertaining. They would have beaten Montreal with a healthy Bergeron and Kobasew.
//Why didn't the Briuns sign Glen Metropolit? That guy's a Bruin.//
Because they need guys who can put the puck in the net.
I love Metro a lot, and good for him for getting a good contract after last year - he deserves it - but they're getting Bergeron back, and Krejci, Sobotka and Savard are more than adequate at center.
The Bruins a non-entity? Seems we were saying similar things about the Pats in the 80s ...
