Possible lineup?

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff July 2, 2008 11:48 AM

If the Bruins stand pat through training camp, here's one iteration of their opening night lineup, assuming a $3.5 million annual salary for Dennis Wideman:

Sturm-Savard-Ryder
Lucic-Bergeron-Kobasew
Axelsson-Krejci-Kessel
Schaefer-Sobotka-Thornton
Nokelainen

Waivers: Glen Murray, Jeremy Reich

Chara-Ward
Stuart-Wideman
Alberts-Ference
Hnidy

Thomas
Fernandez

Total cap hit: $53,224,166

  1. Not sure if I like those lineup combos

    Here is my take:

    Lucic-Savard-Ryder
(Sturm too fast for that line Lucic should give others a lot of space)

    Schaefer - Bergy -Kobasew
(The way both Schaef and Bergy play on the boards would be great together)

    Sturm - Krejci - Kessel
    (Speed line)

    Axe - Svobotka - Thornton
(Axe should be going back to more of a Selke type role)

  1. Towards the end of this season I mentioned many times how much I wanted Michael Ryder to be a Bruins, so yesterday was great news. While in Montreal he played a big tough game and will get the puck on net. He may not be the kind of goal scorer Hossa is, but hes going to make a difference.

The Bruins are putting together a tough team. if Ryder plays with Sturm and Savard, you got him taking care of business for them, and Lucic being the tough guy on the second line with bergeron and kobasew. And all seven of the D-Men we have now are well capable to standing up to the other team (even undersized Andrew Ference).

I think Chiarelli and Julien are taking this team in a perfect direction. They have a vision to get back to the black and blue hockey this city loves and needs. If they continue theyre trend from last year then we may have a team capable of finally bringing us back to the now fictional feeling second round of the playoffs (at least!).

  1. I like this line-up on paper. Lots of interchangeable parts and guys who could ride on any line on any given night. Probably a good sign of consistancy. I would probably tweak Schaffer and Axy and I'd start Hnidy over Ferance

  1. I had sent an Email earlier today to somone and had almost the exact same lines. The only difference was on the 3rd line where I would not put a slowing-down PJ but would put either Sobotka or Nokelainen. PJ, at this point in his career, is a perfect 4th-line checker/penalty killer. But when I was thinking of the lines, my first thought was - Why is Schaefer even on this team? With a cap hit of $2.1 million for the next 2 years he is too much of a drain on the cap for what he provides. I hope PC doesn't feel obligated to keep him simply because of the earlier relationship they had in Ottawa.

  1. More than the lines, I like that it puts us around 3 mil under the cap. That leaves some room to play with going forward. The lines will change speratically throughout the year anyways.
Question: If Manny Fernandez gets injured and is out for the year (which is almost inevitable although I hate to be negative here) does his 4mil. anchor come off the books with him?

  1. I'm hoping PC can deal Schaeffer and Alberts - that frees up some cap space and makes room for one of Lashoff/Hunwick/McQuaid and a forward like Wheeler, Soderberg etc to get some ice time.

  1. Rockstareh good point, there will definately be some healthy competition for spots on the roster. Does anyone know what happens with the cap if say Muzz decides to retire??

  1. If Muzz retires his salary comes off the cap completely I believe since he was under 35 when he signed a multi-year deal.

  1. I think Soderberg gets into that lineup ..

I would love to somehow trade Schaefer, but dont think their are any takers ..
If this world is fair and just, Nokelainen, Sobotka and Soderberg are all on the opening night roster

  1. I understand the attitude towards Schaefer but I really think he still has some worth to this team. I really think the injury to Bergeron hampered what Schaef could have down for the team last year. He is very good working the puck along the boards and has pretty good hands as well. I think he would do great on the same line with Bergy working the boards and cycling the puck. That being said I think Soderberg will be legit and a complete steal for Hannu so I would love to see him make the team

  1. Forget Soderberg. I'll be happy when he finally commits to the team by showing up in the states. Besides, how you gonna develop him with 4th minutes?
