Updated salary breakdown

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff July 2, 2008 09:44 AM

With Michael Ryder in the fold (three years, $12 million), here is the current salary grid detailing each player's annual cap hit:

Forwards

Marc Savard, $5 million
Patrice Bergeron, $4.75 million
Glen Murray, $4.15 million
Michael Ryder, $4 million
Marco Sturm, $3.5 million
Chuck Kobasew, $2.33 million
Phil Kessel, $2.2 million
Peter Schaefer, $2.1 million
P.J. Axelsson, $1.85 million
David Krejci, $883,000
Petteri Nokelainen, $850,000
Milan Lucic, $850,000
Vladimir Sobotka, $750,000
Shawn Thornton, $517,000
Jeremy Reich, $487,500

Defensemen

Zdeno Chara, $7.5 million
Aaron Ward, $2.5 million
Andrew Ference, $1.4 million
Mark Stuart, $1.3 million
Andrew Alberts, $1.25 million
Shane Hnidy, $757,000

* Yet to sign: Dennis Wideman (RFA).

* Matt Lashoff and Matt Hunwick will contend for NHL jobs next year. But for this model, their salaries are not included.

Goalies

Manny Fernandez, $4.33 million
Tim Thomas, $1.1 million

* Tuukka Rask will most likely spend another season in Providence.

Current cap hit: $54,311,666

Notes: With Dennis Wideman expected to receive at least $3 million annually, the Bruins will be over the $56.7 million cap unless they shed salary before then. Either way, they will have to move some money around to be under the ceiling.

  1. Ugh. So there you have it. Other than inking Wideman we're done for the season. That, sports fans, was the off season. You can all go back to calling in tee times now. Now the B's will once again lapse into obscurity until early February. Yawn. I'm no fan of Ryder's, but wasn't a Kobasew fan either and now I'm definitely his fan. Lots of second liners on this club. Ken Hodge Jr. and Steve Leach scored 30 goals too, so I'm going to reserve further comment. I would love to have seen Metro back, but I'm happy he got a 2 year deal. Good for Auld too, although I don't like the idea of seeing him 8 times a season.

  1. A team that is "up 'n' coming" shouldn't be up against the Cap. Horrible management and ownership over the years (particularly pre & post lock out) have left them in a tenuous position. There's a lot to like about the team with Savy, Chara, Bergeron, Lucic, etc. but they need another puck carrying D to make any noise come playoff time.

  1. I don't like seeing Auld or Metro go, but we got well more than our money out them last year. Who knows, Metropolit might manage to inject some class into the Flyers.

I expect two more moves between now and the end of training camp.

  1. They may be over the cap with D-Wide signing, but they would also have 15 forwards and 7 d-men on the roster. So at least one or two will be waived or sent back to Providence (Reich/Noke/Sobotka the most likely), so that will reduce the cap hit.

There's a lot of forwards who could slot into the 3-9 slots that could be used as trade bait here too don't forget. And with Lashoff and Hunwick pushing for a spot on the roster, don't be surprised if Ference or Alberts are dangled as well.

Getting under the cap won't be an issue. I actually don't see them buying out Muzz now, it doesn't make sense if they don't need to. Why incur a cap hit for next year? They're better off trying to convince someone to take a chance on him via re-entry waivers. The addition of Ryder pretty much guarantees he won't be seeing top 6 minutes (He'll be behind Ryder, Kessel and Kobasew on the depth chart ... or should be anyways), but having him ride the pine or watch from the press box is better than sacrificing $1.5 in cap space next year

  1. They need to buyout Murray or try to move him in a package deal if they can somehow. Schaefer, Ference, Hnidy need to be moved. I don't think the B's should give up just yet on Andrew Alberts but if he is essential to a move that would free up space in order to perhaps land another puck moving d-man then fine by me.
Also, i think Carl Soderberg will make the team as will Matt Lashoff. They still are in need of a top 4 puck moving d-man.

This is what the Bruins will look like:

    Sturm---Savard---Ryder
    Lucic---Bergeron---Kessel
    Soderberg---Kreji---Kobasew
    Axelsson---Noke---Thornton

    Chara---Ward
    Alberts---Wideman
    Stuart---Lashoff

    Fernandez
    Thomas
