Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff July 23, 2008 10:44 AM

Dennis Wideman has signed a four-year, $15.5 million extension ($3.875 million annual cap hit).

Wideman will earn $3.25 million in 2008-09, $3.75 million in 2009-10, $4 million in 2010-11, and $4.5 million in 2011-12.

  1. The organization clearly sees something in this kid, because I am _still_ not sure about this signing. I get the potential is there, but he got a huge payout on a relatively mediocre season compounded with high market value of puck moving D in free agency. This is going to be one of those wait and watch signings to see if it pays off....

For those interested, three day "quiet period" followed by a 48 hour buyout period....

Fluto, now that this is finalized, any chance of a current cap breakdown?

  1. Considering some of the crazy contracts being given to defensemen this offseason, Wideman's contract seems reasonable. B's still need another powerplay point guy/puck moving defenseman.

  1. Wideman better make some serious improvements over his performance last year to merit this kind of pay. At least once per game his first pass out of the zone ended up on the other team's stick, sometimes leading to easy goals.

  1. Smells like a Lugo deal to me.

  1. Pretty good for a decent young puck moving defenseman....beats 5 mill a year...

  1. JF-- What signing isn't wait and watch to see if it pays off? What a profound and sage insight.

  1. I posted yesterday 3-3.2 million with bumps in pay over the remaining 3 years would be a fair deal. I also thought Wideman would work with the Bruins in regards to years and money, it kind of looks that way a little. Overall for some of the outrageous deals being thrown around this seems pretty decent.

  1. Remember when he blindly put the puck between his legs infront of the net??? I saw alot of mistakes this kid made. He got real lucky on most of them, the team saved him. Hope to see a lot less mistakes for that money!!!!!
