Bruins don't expect Soderberg

Despite a report today on a Swedish hockey website, the Bruins aren't planning to see Carl Soderberg, their top European prospect, here in Boston when training camp opens Sept. 19.

''News to me,'' said Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli today, when asked about the report on hockeysverige.se, which quoted Soderberg's agent, Claes Elefalk, as saying the young pivot still planned to come to Boston. ''I talked to Soderberg [approximately] 10 days ago, and he told me he's not coming. Just after I talked to him, I talked to Claes, and it seemed we all understood the situation...the kid wants to play another year over there, and we're fine with that.''

Chiarelli said he spoke today with agent J.P. Barry, Elefalk's partner in North America, and Barry was unaware of any change in Soderberg's plans. Barry, according to Chiarelli, said Elefalk was traveling in Spain and could not be reached immediately. Chiarelli said he left a voice mail and email message for Elefalk, but as of late this afternoon afternoon Elefalk had not responded.

''Right now, nothing's changed, I don't think he's coming over,'' said Chiarelli. ''Who knows, maybe he's changed his mind, but we've had no indication of it.''

Hockeysverige.se's story was a direct response to comments Chiarelli made in Sunday's Globe and also carried on Boston.com.

  1. And here we see one of the evils of ad supported "news" outlets.

The extra pageviews thet will get out of this will earn them money for vapor.

  1. Any insight on this KPD?

It seemed that at the start of the off-season it was all but a sure bet that Soderberg was to be here for training camp. Now all of a sudden he's not coming over? This kid is really starting to get on my nerves.

  1. Chiarelli - "No. Soderberg. Remember? We talked about this. You stay in Sweden to...'develop'..Remember? You don't want to play in the NHL this year. OK?" - I think we are seeing the first effects of a GM with little to no wriggle room. The Bruins are too close to the Salary Cap ceiling, forcing them to discourage talented young players away from the roster. When Chiarelli is the business of 'suspending' players to bump their salaries a year, you know he's in trouble. Clear some salary dude, or your young players are gonna start looking elsewhere, to where they have a better chance of playing

  1. What an ego for a nobody, he's never played a game in the NHL and acts as if he deserves a shot here before even going to Providence. Europe can keep him.

  1. Totally off-topic, but Brendan Shanahan is still out there. The Bruins should move Peter Schaefer out and move Shanahan in. Despite the difference in their respective 'stages-of-career', Shanhan still brings way more to the left wing, to the room, to the bench, to the table and, probably for less money. Make Brendan Shanahan a Bruin. He keeps people (Ryder, Kessel. Sturm) honest.

  1. Has anyone other than me counted the number of centers on the Bruins roster?

    There are about 8.

How many lines does a team have?

  1. So true about Soderberg, he needs to make up his mind. Is he really that talented where he can hold the B’s at their mercy. I say we give Chiarelli one more season them see you later.

Tom – I like that idea about bringing Shanny here. Schafer’s been a bust, along with some of the other role players they have picked up over the years. Too bad they let Metropolit go.

  1. Wow Stan / Ceaslie ... that is absolutely ridiculous, and incredibly uninformed. Whether or not this kid comes to camp has absolutely no bearing on the salary cap. There's no guarantee he would make the team. This kid has been waffling about coming to North America since he was in the Blues organization. This is nothing new for Mr Soderberg.

Fact is this kid doesn't want to come to North America if he's not guaranteed an NHL roster spot ... not even for training camp. He won't ever play in Providence because he'd rather be at home (which is fine if thats his choice) but if he's not willing to put in his dues and would rather play in a Tier 2 Swedish league than an NHL developmental league that tells you a little about this kids desire. He might have the talent but his heart's not in it.

Stay in Sweden Carl, I'd rather not have a drama queen like this on the roster anyway.
