* D Scott Fletcher, one of the Bruins invites to training camp, will be looking to scrap (literally) for a job when he arrives.

The Bruins are actively looking for some toughness in Providence, so Fletcher could be a candidate for an AHL job.

* The Sabres are preparing to make a push this year after missing the playoffs in 2007-08, and F Jason Pominville could have a new deal in place before the start of the regular season.

Pominville is in line for a big-time raise. He's one of the reasons Buffalo will be back in the mix this year.

* Carolina could lock up C Eric Staal to a long-term contract before the start of the regular season.

No surprise here, as Staal (especially after the departure of Erik Cole) will be the centerpiece of the Carolina attack for years to come.
