Champs in tonight
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia -- Good morning from the Halifax Metro Centre, where the Bruins are participating in their morning skate prior to tonight's showdown against the defending champs.
Looks like we'll be seeing a top line of Johan Franzen, Henrik Zetterberg, and Jiri Hudler tonight from Detroit.
P.J. Axelsson | Marc Savard | Michael Ryder |
Marco Sturm | Patrice Bergeron | Phil Kessel |
Blake Wheeler | Martin St. Pierre | Martins Karsums |
Jeremy Reich | Nate Thompson | Byron Bitz |
Jeff Penner | Aaron Ward |
Matt Lashoff | Dennis Wideman |
Andrew Ference | Johnny Boychuk |
Tim Thomas |
Tuukka Rask |
As expected, Zdeno Chara (shoulder), Shane Hnidy (knee), and Chuck Kobasew (leg) are not playing. They are all considered day-to-day as they continue to work off their injuries from last season.

??
Only one Matt, no Sobotka, no Lucic, no Stuart...
Who is passing out acid in the management offices?
Savard is going to have a tough time to start the season. If he gets some quik legs along side him the first 1-2-3 weeks will be easier.Ryder,Lucic,P.J. are not the quikest bunch. He is going to have to get up to speed quikly, for this Ryder thing to work.I would put Kessell or Sturm with him and Ryder.
I think it may be Fluto himself passing out the acid.
He has Chuckie on the 1st line, but then goes on to say below that he is still not playing.
Put down the pipe kid ;P
You better watch out, MIke Milbury does not like that "funny business". He will beat you with your own shoe if he finds out.
Can someone please explain to me what Ax's is doing on the top line? On the team for that matter?...Geesh!
I agree, wheres Lucic? Hopefully he does not take this a negative personal insult to his abilities.
Wheres Sobotka? The smart hard hitting, in your face talented youngster. Well hopefully it was just a day off kind of thing.
I would of had:
Lucic Savard Ryder
Sturm Bergeron Kessel
Sobotka Krejci Wheeler
Noki Yelle Thorton
But im not management so...
any chance of this being streamed somewhere Fluto?
Jesse... this is preseason. Why would you worry about the line combinations? They aren't trying to iron them down for the regular season yet... they are just trying to see who works well with one another and give everyone a shot at ice time. There is a reason the third and fourth lines have no one on them... they are prospects who are fighting for an NHL job. Sobotka had his playing time in the first preseason game and was excellent so his positioning is more secure than others like Wheeler and Thompson. That also explains Penner being on the top defensive pairing and Boychuk being in there instead of Alberts or Stuart.
When the games start to matter, then worry about the line combinations...
It's a preseason game for Cripesake! Who cares who plays. I would be more concerned that Chara and Kobasew are "not ready" yet.....
Hey, Jesse, I couldn't have said it better. In fact, those would be my top-12 forwards, too.
Again, don't really know what Axelsson and Schaefer are still doing here - maybe they get shipped out in a trade with Toronto; that's a team always on the lookout for some older talent.
But it's only a preseason roster, so I'm not too concerned. Yet ...
People should stop viewing preseason as the playoffs. The preseason is the time to mess with and experiment with line combinations, it's that simple. This is the time, now, to do it, when the games have no impact on standings etc. I doubt anybody who's not playing is taking it personally.
And beyond that I still can't get over how many Bruins fans underappreciate Axelsson.
There are only about four guys on skates more important to the Bruins success than PJ, and two of them are arguable: Bergeron, Chara, Savard, Thomas.
Ryder, Lucic, Stuart, Kessel, Wideman, Wheeler, Hammil, the three Matts, Sobotka, Krejci ; not yet proven.
Ward, Sturm, Kobasew, Alberts, Hnidy, Ference, Yelle; proven but of far more limited roles.
Everyone else is effectively an unknown.
Axelsson is underappreciated because he underperforms.
He's not the same player he was five years ago.
What was the B's PK ranked last season? 28th? C'mon...
Preseason...
You're absolutely right Pete H. The Bruins power play is completely attributed to one individual. it's not like there's a team or anything. One guy should be at all places on the ice at all times.
The Blue Jackets were ranked 26th for Power Play percentage, but I guess that means they should trade Rick Nash as soon as possible... the same goes for the team dead last on the list, St. Louis... they should have gotten more for Wideman than Boyes and his measly 43 goals right?
Don't even get me started on the 24th ranked Blackhawks... Toews and Kane - why are they even still in the NHL if they're gonne be ranked way at the bottom on the powerplay.
Stats stats stats... they make the world go round don't they? It's all about the stats and rankings guys.. the stuff on paper, to determine how much you mean and contribute to a team.
Pete H, you do understand that one of the guys who has played PK for most of the last three years was not on the ice last season? And that the D had _one_ guy put in a whole season. ONE. And that the most mobile of the D played _59_ games.
Get real
Al, couldn't have said it better. Also do people realize this is the preseason? Its no wonder Bruins fans are considered a joke.
Anyone that is a big fan of PJ Axelsson most likely wears a skirt. The guy doesn't hit, doesn't fight, shys away from contact and score about 7 goals a year at most....an utterly forgettable player.
