Back on campus

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff October 10, 2008 12:56 PM

As an ex-college hockey writer, it's always fun to see some NCAA rinks for the first time.

Been fortunate to see two in the last two days -- Magness Arena at the University of Denver, and Mariucci Arena at the University of Minnesota. Both really nice rinks.

But Mariucci is special. First, the seats are positioned at a steep angle, allowing fans to feel like they're on top of the ice. Second, along the concourse are photos and murals that serve as a tribute to Minnesota hockey. There's a funny picture of the 2005-06 team with Phil Kessel and Blake Wheeler. There's a fantastic banner with the names of all the Gophers that played in the Olympics.

Good times.

  1. Could you expand on what made the 05-06 picture "funny"?
